A friend mentioned that someone he knows here in Cork puts up his artwork for sale in galleries in Cork and they sold for 300 euro +.

I also do oil paintings and was wondering if anyone knows where in Cork I could sell my artwork to galleries here?
If so, what would be the charges and how often could I sell them?

You need portfolio of art that is similar in style, don't go to galleries with a range of your abilities - they want something that says you and are all on a similar thread. e.g don't go with animals, then some landscapes and a few portraits, unless they are all in the same style/medium and are easily recognisable as the same artist.

You need to have a walk round various galleries and see who sells similar works or who would suit what you're selling, no point taking landscapes to a gallery that mainly does people. Go in and ask to arrange an appointment with the gallery owner, they may say they are free at that moment so always have you portfolio on hand! They may say no or they may want to only take one or two to start with or they may want a bunch to do a small exhibition or part of a larger one. Sometimes they have a list of artists and may only take a couple of pics for a particular exhibition once a year, so don't expect them to take a load off you unless you are very good and well known!

Make sure you have you work framed appropriately, preferably all the same - not cheap so do find out first if they want your art before forking out hundreds for frames!

Price - you need to include the galleries commission on top of what you want for your picture, including framing costs, galleries can charge upto 90% commission so find out first, allow for a bit of barter room too!
As for how often can you sell them - depends if anyone buys them!
You could also approach restaurants/hotels as they have artwork sometimes for sale in them, just beware though you don't get paid until the art sells so you need to keep an eye on them to make sure they haven't sold and they haven't told you, also your work can get damaged, frames nearly always get chipped!

Another way of selling one off paintings would be to join an art society, if you did landscapes for example, there are societies that specialise in those, they often have exhibitions sometimes juried sometimes not, and it gets your art out to places that aren't local or to other countries. I do wildlife so sometimes send pics to exhibitions in london and there are others around the world so plenty of opportunity to get your stuff out there, and it's much cheaper than having to frame a whole load for a gallery!

What do you do? Any pics?:)

My instagram is isaac__hamilton . This site won't let me post my pics or url so check it out there if you wish.

This is one of my oil paintings and the rest are just drawings. All I have got on my phone so far. I like messy paintings in general. I don't exactly keep my work neat, and I love abstract too. I only did drawings and some painting with acrylic paint before I started oil which was about 6 months ago.

Thank you for the information, it was really helpfull. I like the idea of contacting art galleries not only in Ireland but also England. I would like to just earn a little part time. Still in college and it's like a hobby. Can I see your work?

By the way I'm in Cork.

Hi Isaac, if you go to your Instagram page and click on an image, the go to the top and copy the url, then come onto boards and go to 'post' and along the top you will see a small yellow icon, 3 icons over to the right of the post a lnk icon (the small blue circle with the 2 link chain), paste the url of your image in the dialog box and hit return, your image should appear in the post.

You can't post pictures and URL until you've been a member of Boards for a certain amount of time and until you've at least a certain number of posts, though, so keep that in mind.

Also, if https://www.instagram.com/isaac__hamilton/ is your account, it's set as private so people without an instagram a/c won't be able to view it.
