Are Gardai enforcing unaccompanied permit holder laws?

I know there is currently a law that states you cannot drive unaccompanied with a learner permit. However we all know this law isn't inforced for whatever reason.

Before the Christmas break I heard of new legislation coming in to crack down on this. My question is, has this new legislation come into effect yet? And when/if it does with it be inforced?

Thanks for anyone with any info on this.

The new legislation involves prosecuting the owner of a car who allows a learner permit holder to drive unaccompanied.

And I know of 2 learner permit holders who have been given penalty points for driving unaccompanied.

Has that new legislation been implemented yet, and are the Gardai either now or in the future going to inforce it?

It will be enforced. I don't think it's at the high end of the list of priorities for most Guards, but you have to assume that it will be.

You are obliged to carry your licence with you at all times. If you're stopped driving unaccompanied, and asked for your licence, there's a good chance you'll have an €80 fine and 2 penalty points on its way to you!

The question is, how likely are you to be stopped?

No it isn't. The question is, "why haven't you passed your driving test?"

Why is there always a thread on the first page in this forum smelling like "I am driving unaccompanied" :D

Because like many driving laws in Ireland(like slowing down when lights turn amber/stopping on red :pac: ), it's not enforced so people will always come in to ask about it.
Based on my extremely limited knowledge of this (the Garda twitter feed), the only L drivers, unaccompanied they seem to catch are the ones stupid enough to also drive without NCT/Tax/Insurance (often all 3)

Why even ask the question? The law says you cannot drive unaccompanied. So don't.
