Phone Recommendations

    Hey guys
I'm looking to treat myself to a new android phone and I'm hoping you can offer some advice. I would prefer to buy a sim free phone as opposed to being tied to any mobile network in particular and I would like to have a good camera and decent battery life. I currently have a Wileyfox Swift 2 plus but the camera really isn't up to scratch and I'm willing to spend £300 - £400 (deepening on the specs) for a more mid-upper range phone. Have looked at OnePlus before and have heard good things? I;m not too fussed about the brand but would rather purchase on a UK/Irish site (such as Amazon) as opposed to any Chinese brands that I've seen mentioned here.
Looking forward to any suggestions you may have and thanks in advance.

My current and last phone have been OnePlus phones. Currently have a OnePlus 5 that has been recently replaced by the 5t (nicer screen and improved camera). For €500 it's outside your budget but you're getting a very high end phone at a significantly lower price than the likes of Samsung etc without compromising that much.

If you want to keep within your budget and aren't too fussed with very high end specs, I'd probably recommend the Motorola Moto G5S Plus. The Moto G phones are one of the most competitively priced mid-range phones for what you get. Very decent specs at a fraction of the price of the high end stuff. You can pick one up for around €288 on amazon UK currently. Having said that, the Moto G6 range should be out in the next few months so may be worth holding off.

After loads of a research I picked up the lg g6 for just under €400 on amazon.co.uk

Excellent phone, camera is great on it and I love the wide angle lens.

Battery life I get a day and a half on mild to heavy usage (I don't play games).

Specs are great as its a 2018 flagship phone, screen is excellent 5.7inch but has 18:9 display which makes it usable with one hand.

The only flaw I had was I wasn't mad on the lg software so I just switched to the pixel launcher and perfect.

To date I have yet to find a fault and just find it all around excellent.

Also has expandable storage up to 256gb.

The other phones I considered were moto g5 plus, moto g5s plus, one plus 5, xiaomi mi6

Another you could consider is the LG V20 which is available on eglobalcentral.eu for just over €300. Very good camera, big RAM and storage, and replaceable battery

I had a V20 for a few months. It was good at first then terrible. Battery would last till about 6pm and then charge would deteriorate from 40% to 0 almost instantly. Signal in bad areas is terrible. I rarely got a signal at home.

My last post about it here was praising how good it was doing on holiday. It then continued to reset itself constantly.

Got rid of it in CEX and got a Sony Xperia XZ premium. I had to replace that one because the bottom speaker was not working. But apart from that I would say that this is one of the best phones I have ever had. Battery management is superb. It learns your charging patterns and would set the way it charges (combination of slow and fast charge) to maximize its usage. Battery is usually about 20 real percent (no sudden drop in power) after 14 hours from full charge.

You probably won't hear or read much about it as Sony are not the big PR magnet like Samsung or Apple. But I have never gone for top brands and trends to look for something different.

I was very tempted by the G6 before Christmas and read on a few forums that it has serious issues after a few months of use. After 6 months its common for the battery to no longer hold a charge, which is crazy. LG are not the best for reliability it seems.

I'm considering a Oneplus 5T at the minute, also tempted by Xiaomi's offerings. The Mi Mix 2 looks interesting, but it has it's quirks.

I think an LG G5 would be a good option and can be had for a great price. It's not a mid range phone, it's a high end phone with a great dual cameras. The processor is the same as the Galaxy S7 and has 4GB of ram. If you go for it make sure you get the H850 model and make sure it's not the SE version which is a lesser model using a slower processor. It's a bit smaller then the V20 and G6 which are great fones but you can get the G5 for a quite a bit less.
