Just wondering has anyone ever done a night/weekend welding course in the midlands/dublin.
If so was it beneficial and what were costs/time input etc?.

Yeah I did the FAS one in athlone back in the day. A few hours on a Tuesday night over 10 weeks. Think it was €100 or something like back then. Could be wrong on that tho

I was just looking at the possibilities in Dundalk last night I haven't done much welding before I wonder would it be worth it

I did the one in AIT this Autumn. Every Monday for 8 weeks. It was supposed to be over 10 weeks but the instructor doubled up over a couple of nights. Did half the course on gas welding at the start and then onto arc. Instructor was great and really approachable. It cost 350 but it was definitely worth it. I was kinda able to weld but it has improved my welds immeasurably. I now have confidence in my welds.

Sounds very good I don't have much faith in my hands and would be nervous about doing a course like that but I suppose I'll only ever improve by doing.
It would be a great think to be able to do because it's very hard to get anyone to do a bit of welding for you. We must have waited 2 months to get a bit of work done to a shed/crush. The course alone probably wouldn't get me to that high a standard but sure it's something to build on

The course will have you to a point that your confident to do it yourself. You'll improve yourself as you practice. It's strange as most lads around here can weld. Esp farmers as once you learn you'll wonder why you didn't learn earlier

Mate of mine did it in Dundalk last year, he started from scratch and is fairly handy now.
I have him plagued doing stuff for me, think he might regret doing it now!ðŸ˜

+1 on that it will do your confidence the power of good. I'd say it was a 50/50 split on the course I did between lads who had a bit of experience and lads who had never welded before.

It's often the lads that never did it before do the best. They tend to stop and listen to instruction rather than thinking they know how to do it fastest. The olde ESB entrance exam springs to mind.. Anyone know of that?

Definitely something I'd be interested in doing. Anyone know of any courses in the West or even Athlone coming up? Where did ye find the courses?

The one in AIT will be listed on the lifelong learning section of their website and I'm not sure about the one in the old fas place but they had a banner up before Christmas advertising night courses. Surely GMIT would run similar courses?

These welding courses were discussed here before and a lot of lads felt they didnt learn a whole lot and the theory side of things bored them. I never did a welding course but think I might do one now. Always regretted not doing one.
Like most courses if you only learn one thing, it is worth your while.

I wouldn't be signing up to that DIT too quickly, I know from experience that they have taken practical elements out of courses in the last 2 years due to lack of money/resources.

There is one in mountrath run by Metac. It's done one evening a week over 6-8 weeks. Did it a few years ago and found it useful. They have an open night next week actually. Just got the text today as they send it this time every year.

If your doing one in Dundalk do a night one. Those day time/fas or whatever its called now are a waste of time as there's a bunch of messers who don't want to be there in them.

Anyone thinking of doing one take a look at what processes will be taught, choose one where there is a lot of focus on MMA(stick welding) this is for two reasons, firstly, you will learn far FAR more about welding from burning a few hundred stick rods than you ever will pressing the trigger on a MIG machine, secondly MMA is relatively cheap to get set up with yourself.

A couple of hours once a week for 6 weeks by itself will not get you up to a super high standard, it should be used as a guide, the instructors should show you what to look for in a decent weld and teach you basic technique, the real benefit is being prepared to spend your own time on it practicing the basics you are taught in classes but in your own place.

Thanks sea12, just worried someone not posting here could use the number for something not intended.

    Cheers:)
