    I have not played a single game in the series, except for the one released for the 3DS. Curious what makes them so popular.

    Might as well take the thread seriously anyway.

    They're full of popular characters and are fun to play out of the box in big multiplayer matches.

    On a competitive side, it's full of high execution techniques, and is fast paced, but you do have to change a lot of the default settings, and ban a lot of stages for it to be tournament worthy.
