Hi everyone happy new year to you all, I hope you had a good Christmas break, looking forward to chatting to you, first time poster, long time follower, ok looking for some views /advice please, I'm a retained firefighter, 16 years service, was initially travelling to Canada with my wife for the holidays, didn't happen, fine, spent Xmas at home, and we had the most beautiful, amazing, wonderful, Xmas because I was on leave for ten days, no pager, no mobile, nobody calling me to return to station, was very upset when Xmas was done, back on call now, no quality of life, strengthened my resolve to say I don't want to do this job anymore, heart isn't in it, not happy, will give it a while yea, but I'm telling myself this is my last year, anybody help me please,? Thanks all 😌

Am I missing something? The problem is your job and you need to change it. Unless there's something else you haven't mentioned, there's no decision to make and you just need to start jobhunting

Funny enough I was talking to a fireman a couple of months back and he said he gets a buzz waking up every morning before he heads off to work, made it seem like a career with a lot of job satisfaction. Always 2 sides I guess.

Suggestion would be to take a longer term view and look into related businesses like training companies, fire safety companies, large manufacturing companies that have a fire safety unit. Maybe see are there courses out there that would open doors. You might end up with more predictable hours and higher salary even.

No I'm being honest, it can be good as in rewarding, but your at the behest of your pager, no official or unofficial roster very difficult to make plans for yourself wife etc, think life's too short thanks tho, I just needed to hear different opinions, atmosphere in station not great sometimes too, that's another element, really appreciate your view tho thanks,
