hi all, my Focus 1.6 diesal stopped this morning. The last few days the engine has been "hegging" or reving up an down when started. A local mechanic plugged it into diagnostics a few days ago but he wasn't 100% certain what was wrong. 2 faults were injectors and abs, he cleared them. Said it might be the injectors but to drive on and see. Well she started this morning, cut out, started again and cut out in the drive. So, I left her there. Any ideas what could be wrong. no lights on dash. Its just an unusual engine sound of her reving / or hegging up and down. it's intermittent. Doesn't happen every time.

The #1 culprit to that engine suddenly cutting out is a blocked fuel filter, this does not log any faults.

I hope it is only blocked fuel filter.
I've it going down to the garage this evening. Everyone keeps telling me it's likely the injectors $$$$$$
There was a funny rattle when the indy mechanic test drove the car the other day after plugging in the diagnostics. He did a reset I think is what he said.
He said the noise could be the injector nozzles. the fact injectors came up as a fault is worrying.

Get the garage to do a live fuel pressure reading, if that's OK, then get a leak-off test done to see if any 1 injector is poor compared to the others.

    A pre-loved injector is around €100.

Are you using a Ford garage?

yes, it's going to Ford garage where I bought it. He said they'll put it on diagnostics and take it from there. I looked on Micksgarage and a fuel injector nozzle is €479 for one
The guy in service asked me do you want it serviced or to get it going for you? I was like err get it going, I'll worry about servicing it once it's going again and see what's left in my wallet ha.

*If* it is injectors trouble, would a main dealer be willing to fit used?

Engine revving itself, wasn't it usually a timing belt issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭mullingar

There should be no reason why they would not as it's a genuine Ford part. They will probably just say they can't stand over it

Better off going to an independent garage with a 6 year old car.

Exchange recon injectors for the newer 8v 1.6TDCI are very cheap from Ford (approx €150 each ex VAT) so not worth bothering with secondhand.

However usually when one of those injectors fail the engine still runs just on 3 cylinders so in this case it is unlikely to be an injector problem.

If it stopped altogether having been running badly I'd be changing the fuel filter first as already mentioned.

I have a fuel filter in the boot of car since the car's oil was changed and new air filter about 3 months ago. OH said at time it ok for the moment and he'd put it in soon
