Just want to warn people about all the dodgy English imported cars coming in at the moment ...I recently bought one on done deal 4000euro ..(there's no come back)...I found 8 out 10 had different milage on the English M O T than the NCT ..... Been told by my mechanic there's sites with hundreds of thousands of cars sitting in fields in England being bought online and shipped back and along the way the milage is changed...or they are problem cars like mine .......he had an audi on the lift customer had paid 12000euro ..full of rust ... There was even a story in today's Irish times 2 Jan 2018......about the number of English second hand cars affecting new car sales....very murky world indeed...

They’re not all bad. True there are a few lemons knocking about but there is an equal number of Irish lemons on the road too... Clocking UK cars is a bit of an issue but anyone with any bit of cop on should in theory be able to spot that given the amount of car check sites and even the free MOT check page the UK government setup.

If your going to be paying someone a lot of money for a car ( or the person paying 12k for the audi) it’s insane not to get it checked out by someone who knows what they are looking at, especially if there is no warranty/comeback... I know a lot about cars myself but must admit I have missed one or two things in the heat of negotiation.. I’ve imported a good few UK cars in the past few years and there are plenty of good ones there to be got, the dodgy ones tend to be the cheapest of the cheapest and are picked up by wheeler dealers looking to make a quick buck.

Exactly, the UK has so many more cars than Ireland. There's always going to be lemons..

If you pay way under comparable cars in this country, what do you expect? If it's cheap, there's usually a reason.

So you spent €4k on a car and didn't bankroll a €15 car history check before buying it?

Just on this, are all the history check sites the same or which one is recommended?
If the car is coming in from England is it even worthwhile using one of the Irish sites?

Id you’re looking at unusually cheap cars there’s usually a story.

I'd say if you take it in proportion you'd have more dodgy Irish cars!

If someone wants to pay big money for a car without checking it over fully then they deserve all they get.

Exactly, we don't even have an official write off vehicle register in the country.

sure they record the mileage now at NCT but theres no way to check the history of it! The MOT check in the UK is great by comparison.

This thread is very misleading but very typical of blaming the country of the car's origin rather than the circumstances that lead to buying a dodgy car. The fact is that there is more traceability on a Uk car's history than there is on a similar Irish car. Also there is nothing mentioned about the sellers of these dodgy cars over here, they are the dodgy crooks who deal in such cars with colourful pasts.

Reality is that if you buy a cheap car from a supermarket car park seller and do no background checks on it prior to handing over your money then your bound to get stung. Alot of this can be avoided if only buyers educated themselves a spent a few quid and a bit of time doing background checks. Instead we have threads like this with hysterical warnings of not to buy cars that originally came from outside the state. There are plenty of good, honest second hand UK cars for sale but they are not the cheapest of the cheap or being sold by colourful characters with disposable sim cards who meet you in the local Aldi car park.

Lots of negative publicity put out by the motor trade, who themselves import about half of the used cars coming into the country.

This is a great free feature to have it baffles me how the RSA and NCT don't have something like this in Ireland, it's not the 1980s any more, a lookup database is not exactly costly to implement or maintain

Thing is i spent 180euro on carcheck which shows the uk history ..and the one i finally bought had 60k 3years ago in uk..and is in ireland with 120k ..so maybe its ok except it giving problems with egr valve etc......would say 8 out of 10 on done deal around my price range 4500..were fake miles ..problem is the irish tax office issue a cert with whatever miles are on the clock ...even though u could see on mot.. cars had couple of hundred thousand more over there in da uk..

In todays irish times ..p15 ..theres an article ..about this at the end of it says cartell did a check ona sample of 6000 cars and found 14.3 % had outstandind finance.....it also says 93.500 used cars were imported this year .......point is the dealers big and small dont know anything about them ...and if they are buying them cheap in england then adding vrt and making a profit ..they are buying a lot of crap

Of the ones with outstanding finance. Many would be ex lease cars where no party has a financial interest in the car but the records are not up to date.

I wonder who has a vested interest in the likes of that newspaper article given that dealers here who don't import UK used cars have most to lose on their used Irish stock.

Thread title would be a great name for a garage.

Hardly cartel who sell history reports! They'd never be that cynical?
