SMS - sent from overseas to Ireland, but sender's number changed

    On New Years day, I received a few SMS from family back in NZ.

    I thought it was odd to see the SMS messages were sent from +261331xxxxxx numbers. Normally, they would be from +64xxxxxxxxx.

    I asked the family members if they're in Madagascar (int'l prefix of +261) - they said no and haven't been there before.

    Is it possible that the numbers were somehow changed during the SMS journey from NZ to Ireland?

    NB: My mobile operator is O2/3.
