I am thinking of buying one of these cars. My father is telling me to steer well clear as that is a bad engine. Its a lovely looking car with high spec. I don't know much abour cars so said id throw it up here. Thoughts?

    It’s a great engine... I’m on my second ;)
They have 2 timing belts and unfortunately the bottom “wet belt” doesn’t always get changed with the top belt... when it fails bye bye engine.
So if your getting one make sure the belts(both) are done. If not budget 650€ to have them done. (You won’t get it done cheaper and if the seller produces a receipt for say 350€... then only one belt is done) ... parts iirc are about 350 alone and there’s a lot of work involved.
They are a great engine but might have a bad name because of wet belts not being done on time.

I second what Marty said. They are a great engine. Dad had one in an S-Max and that was no bother to it so in a Mondeo its even better.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Driving an 09 1.8 TDCI for the past three years. I've put nearly 100,000 km on it (120k to 220k). Changed the belts at the recommended time of 200k km (martyc5674 is spot on with the estimate of the belts). Mechanic said they were as worn as he has seen belts so worth changing early.
I haven't had to spend an extra penny other than general maintenance & wear and tear.

The wet belts are known for premature failure so should be done slightly arlier than recommended

Yeah I think the interval is 125k miles... 90k miles you should consider changing them.

I think your father means the 1.6 TDCI engine.

    They are a nightmare.

I got rid of my focus last year, i was glad of it.

Got a Galaxy with the 2.0 tdci engine and it is a fantastic motor.

The beauty of the 1.8 is it doesn’t have a DPF (on the mondeo anyway some of the focus of that era have it)... and you can blank the EGR without it throwing a tantrum.
