VRT inconsistencies - 6 month older car valued higher than newer model

Imported an Oct 2015 car just before Christmas. Highish 60K miles on 2 year old car meant the revenue value was discounted to reflect that.
However if I change the age of the car back to March 2015, and nothing else, the revenue valuation magically goes up by €500.

The implication is that the identical car 6 months older, same miles etc, is worth more. The reasoning is lost on me, but perhaps someone with more knowledge of the trade will confirm that logic holds.

Higher discount applied for mileage being over a shorter period? Think I was seeing similar when checking various combinations. Should be able to see if it's the "Mileage Discount" that is making the difference to final price.

    Is it a hybrid?

It's because of the mileage per month. It's a result of the logic they use to value cars which works on the whole but there are anomalies like you've seen.

If you've paid higher VRT than you should have, then APPEAL! In my experiences, where there is good reason for the appeal (chancing your arm isn't a good reason!) then Revenue will issue a refund.
Get together whatever evidence you can to support your case and send it with the appeal. Similar cars priced lower (on Donedeal or Ebay etc) are good evidence, as is the condition of the car where the car is in fair or worse condition. You should take pics of damage to bodywork where repairs are needed.
