Refurbished Laptops

Looking to pick up a laptop for the house. Main use will be running football manager, casual browsing. Looking to pick up something with ideally 8GB of RAM, an I5 processor and SSD. However, my budget probably doesn't allow for this, has limited to around 500 quid.

I came across this on adverts and was wondering what are peoples thoughts. The below for example, specs look brilliant for the price, however conscious it is probably a 3/4 year old model used by companies. I was always of the opinion that a CPU can last upwards to 10 years, similarly an SSD. Can get a 12 month warranty on it, has a new SSD fitted so my main worry is probably the battery. What are peoples thoughts on refurbished, should they be avoided at all costs?

Search luzerntech on eBay. They sell refurbs. I got a grade A hp laptop from them last year. Was in perfect condition, and had tracked shipping from Poland.

Never bought new laptop myself always prefer to get good second hand than a new run of the mill, thats just what my budget allowed.
Battery would be the main concern, and even at that its easily replaced.
The linked one is sold looking at the comments but there is a few sellers on adverts selling decent refurbs.

Yes sorry, should have said, it is gone. More just wondering if the concept of buying a refurbished and older model was a bit naive! I think I might take the plunge. Any input as to best place to buy is appreciated!

That is just too expensive. I often find that most refurbs are over priced. A search on Ebay throws up loads of these for ~300 with varying spec. Most don't have SSDs, but you can buy your own for small money these days.

These are all roughly 5 years old. Nothing wrong with that, but you have to consider that they will have a limited life in terms of performance and general hardware. I would tend to agree with you about CPUs for the most part, they should be able to keep up with most tasks for a long time. But that's not to say that they will handle everything, playing 4K videos for example might be a problem (admittedly this is nothing to worry about, but just as an example).

The only thing new laptops have are higher resolution displays. This interests me not in the slightest. My 8ish year old Toshiba satellite was stolen during a burglary recently (big score for that guy!) so I replaced it with a Toshiba protégé r840, i7, ssd, win 10 pro from eBay for £150 delivered. Old but gold, barely a scratch on it - battery is crap but I've got spares

If you know what your doing there's no real reason to fork out for new

    Cheers, really good feedback.

I am in discussions to buy the below, can get it for €400 with a 12 month warranty. I agree I probably could get something like you quoted, but an SSD would set me back 50 quid at least wouldn't it? Not the most savy when it comes to builds either so wouldn't be overly confident in pulling apart and putting back together again, so before you know it with posting I'm up to 400 quid.

With the one I've quoted it's a local seller, who has nothing but good reviews & free delivery/12 month warranty (with phone number so fairly easy to contact).

Has anyone any experience with the Intel Core i5-3360M Dual Core Processors, or is there a separate thread I might get feedback on this?

400 seems okay to me actually.

I have a similar vintage processor, an i5-3317U. Now mine is actually lower powered, meant for ultrabooks/portables. So the processor in that Dell is actually a good chunk more powerful (and power hungry). I don't see much issue with it to be honest.

I've purchased tow chomebooks in the past 6 months refurbished from laptops direct.
    1. Acer R11 for 120 euro (no webcam working).
    2. Acer R13 for 170 euro.

Cant fault either. Quality of the units was good as say 1-2 months useage. Very few marks. Battery life still solid.
Based on my experience, refurbished has been a winner.

I think that it's a good option for the real low-end stuff like this.
but for a more mid-range pc with the new 8th gen offering big perf upgrades on the i5 chips to 4-core I'd buy a new one at the moment.
also 1080p screens are now pretty standard on those laptops also which you still don't get a lot on refurbished ones as it's older stock.

Try Openlogic.ie. they have a few well specced enterprise level notebooks with warrantee for reasonable prices.

You'll need to create an account on their site to see the prices. I've bought some HP desktops from them in the past and they were grand ! Brands like HP and Lenovo from €199.

They have a brick and mortar shop in Ballybrack.
