Replace manual ball valve handle with actuator... possible?

    Hi All,

Looking to know if this task is as simple as google would lead me to believe.... essentially take off the bolt that holds the handle in place and replace with an actuator (which then gets hooked into heating relay) for motorised control rather than manual handle turning for just heating vs hot water vs both control? I’m lead to believe there would be no need to drain system etc. To make this change.

It’s a 2 way port and 22mm valve from what I can see and I’d love links or suggestions for items that will work from people with some more experience

once the actuator is compatible to the head of the ball valve I cant see what the issue would be

just make sure you get the wiring side of it right and the voltage of the actuator

what exactly do you want it to control as its a 2 port vale it can only be open or closed

you may have to purchase a valve cw actuator if your own is not suitable

    Thanks.

It’s a poor attempt at zoned heating / hot water. Closing the valve makes it just heat the water (and one rad......). I’m going through an automation kick so have remote control of boiler and want to get and getting a new thermostat and 2 channel boiler switch one of which will would throw the valve to just heat the water.

The wiring I’m ok with, looked at some wiring diagrams and logic is easy to follow. It’s the bits closer to plumbing I’m more concerned about.

What do I need to look out for in terms of matching the actuator to the valve head?

Currently valve looks like the link below

have a google search of actuated ball valves

my concern would be how do you mount the actuator to an existing ball valve

actuated ball valves was something I had a bit of experience with years ago when I used to work in the compressed air industry

back then the valves wer always supplied with the actuator which was removable for installation etc

so this may not be as simple as google says without bleeding the system and fitting a different valve

My doubt of google led me to asking here. I was hoping to essentially fit an actuator to the existing valve (after removing the handle) but can’t find anything specific about it from searching.

Loads of actuators and valves sold as pairs which makes sense but not much guidance on using the actuator with an existing valve.

In a lot less time that it would take you to start rummaging around trying to find something compatible, and trying to adapt it, a good Plumber would have the correct item fitted and the system refilled.
