Scrabble rule?

Can a new word in scrabble be formed by extending from the beginning or end of an existing word?
An example we just had is GLAND running down the board. A player used this G at the start and made FIRING, running directly down from above (not a right angle) so we were left with FIRING and GLAND with the G bridging both.
Can we make a new word in this way?

    Nope.

Not unless the new word (which in your example would be "firingland") actually exists.
