The Megane is a hatchback not a saloon but either way would be superior to that Astra saloon which looks as appealing as a wort on your nose. That model Astra has been around since 2004 and the 1.3 diesel engine is very underpowered. The Megane has been around since 2009 so is a more modern design than the Astra, the 1.5 diesel engine has a bit more life in it especially the 110bhp version. Also the Renault Fluence would be the saloon version of the Megane and are well within budget. Meganes and Fluences are generally better equipped too and have a higher safety rating than that Astra.

Laguna is worth a look too.

Of the two, I'd definitely pick the Megane or as bazz suggests have a look at a Fluence, the Megane has very low mileage, I haven't heard of any dpf issues with the Renault, bazz or colm may know more, the 1.5 engine is reliable & frugal on fuel & a big step up from your current Megane in every way, it would be like sitting into a new car with that milage

Thanks.Would you know how is the reliability on the Renault's around that year (generally speaking) presume the electrical issues with the earlier models were sorted out

I had to change a bulb on the wife's 11 reg fluence today, 180,000kms on the clock, car just fails to skip a beat in any way, I'd imagine that the 10 reg Megane is similar assuming it was serviced & looked after

By the way, had a 05 Megane from 07 to 15 so understand where you're coming from

A scooter would be a step up on the current Megane! There is more wrong than right with it but in fairness she has put 150,000 kms on it in 4 years so it doesnt owe her anything.

Cheers thats good to hear. Will give them a shout and ask about any service record etc. Want to move fairly quickly dont want to put any more cash into the current car

Stay away from both, particularly the Megane, they are dreadful buckets.

Wait a few weeks till the new year registrations start turning over the second hand stock, or even pop into a few main dealers now and ask them what they may have due in as trade-ins to suit your needs. Corolla, Octavia, Jetta with a good service history (belts and pumps never left late) would be my recommendations. You might have to go to 6.5k but youll get a deal.

The Megane is a very solid if very dull car but if you are looking for hassle free motoring and a reasonable expectation of avoiding high repair costs then they are a good bet.

The op has said his budget is 6k tops, what's your experience of the Megane? We've had at least one Renault in the drive, sometimes two since 2000, the Megane 2 which they currently have is a well known ball of sh1te but the later models it's generally accepted are a huge improvement, I would have thought albiet not to everyone's taste, I can only go on my 17 years of Renault ownership

If happy with the Megane, I'd offer 4.5k straight deal & see where it goes from there, if you purchase & if not done recently get oil & filters changed & serviced on time going forward.

The Megane model your looking at is like chalk and cheese compared to your current Megane regarding reliability. The newer Megane/Fluence are very reliable cars.

That's exactly what we are looking for. It will be used for constantly ferrying kids around to matches etc so doesn't need to win any style awards.
