I was driving on motorway earlier and Yellow engine light came up.

The car is still under warranty and my question is can I take the car to any Benz dealer or it has to be the same dealer where i purchased it?
I have moved city so my own dealer is like 150 km away.

Was it a new purchase or a used dealer sale?
Is there a performance difference since the light came on?

It was a used a year used sale, 151 model.

No performance issue. Running all well, pick up is normal.
I checked diesel and adblue tank caps, and tighten them up again, but light still there.

Once it's still in manufacturers warranty you can take it to any dealer. I assume 151 Merc comes with more than 2 years manufacturer cover?

Yes, it comes with 3 year manufacturer warranty.

Just checked now, It was a "Star Select" purchase, so it's under warranty until March 2018.

Was that a UK import and are you 100% sure that the Irish dealer is going to honour a three year UK warranty?

Reason I ask is because last year (2017) I was looking at a 161 E200 which was a UK import on the forecourt of a Dublin MB dealer but the three year UK warranty was going to be converted to a two year Irish warranty. But.... there may have been some negative pushback on this and they may have caved in on the issue.

The car Irish registered and not a UK import. I have the original document which shows date of first registration and the Irish County.

And re: UK import, you're right. A friend bought 171 C220D from Northern Ireland and it has only 2 year warranty.

Given my car is Irish registered, can any Benz dealer in Ireland sort out the engine light issue?

Eh, plug in a diagnostic scanner?

If you have an MB warranty then the answer is yes but phone your nearest MB dealer in the morning and ask the people in the service dept., they will quickly tell you once you quote the reg. no.

BTW, based on the conversation I had with the Dublin MB dealer last year, you are quoting the warranty periods the wrong way around - the UK (incl. NI) warranty is three years and its two years here. What the dealer told me was that a UK import that comes into the Republic via the MB dealer network reverts to the standard ROI two year warranty i.e. it loses the third year of it's three year UK warranty. If your friend brought that C220 from NI himself, it's still covered by a UK three year warranty but he would probably have to bring it back to NI to make a warranty claim in the third year.

Isn't there quite a hoo-hah about trying to bring in a Merc from the UK anyway?

I think Mercedes dealers in the UK will refuse sales if they realise the cars are for export to Ireland or something like that?

Ah, if I just bought a €30k car i'd want the dealer to look at it for me.

Can you suggest a OB scanner for C class? A good one, which can even delete minor errors and tell us what part need to be replaced. I would use it in future once the warranty is over.

    Thanks.

I will ring my local benz dealer in an hour. Hope they are open today.

If you search the DIY forum there are many threads with scanner suggestions there, but as long as car is in warranty you may as well let dealer handle everything.

    An Update :

The Engine light was due to a faulty oxygen sensor. The dealer has changed it now.

I am wondering is this a common issue? Given the car is relatively new.

Could be a bad sensor from initial build, may never happen again. Looking on Honest John or carsurvey.org might point towards other instances of it.

Ok, i am surprised because another oxygen sensor was replaced 6 months ago and now this one. I think the are 4 o2 sensors in all.
Could driving the car harshly (sudden acceleration on motorway although within speed limits) damage such sensors?
I will check the sites you recommended now.

I didn't think diesels had oxygen sensors? Perhaps things are different with the latest cars though.

They said it was issue with exhaust and oxygen. Replaced the malfunction part. Car is working smoothly now :)

How did the warranty go? Mercedes warranty or garage warranty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,914 ✭✭✭masterboy123

It is Mercedes warranty. But i ended up going to my benz dealer where I bought the car from. The local benz dealer gave a date after 7 days just to see the issue. I didn't mind driving 800 kms (2 round trips) as i got replacement car for 2 days.
