Is the radio turning itself on and off when it should?

Could be just a case of swapping the two 12v cables on the loom (should have bullet connectors for this)

I do have something in my head that says it's because there's no permanent live in those vans radio because of the multiplex wiring. Or something.

    Try swapping the wires first.

If all comes to all you can run a wire from the back of the radio to the fuse box which will solve your problem.

    It's wired wrong.

There's a 12V+ that is always connected to the battery and there's a 12V+ that is connected when the car is turned on. The former maintains supply and keeps your station memory intact, the latter powers the radio.

The wire swap should work easier before running any cables direct to the battery.

Swap around the Red and Yellow wires which are on the loom connected to the back of the radio.
