Car broken into

    Hi Guys,

My car got broken into today. Window smashed and door damaged from what i think is a brick of some sort. Went through the glove box but there wasn't anything of any value to be taken.

Just wondering regarding getting the window replaced. Anybody have any idea as to what the price would be to get a front drivers side window replaced? If it isn't that much was thinking of just getting it done to save on the hassle of dealing with the insurance company

Do you have windscreen or glass replacement under your policy? A broken side window maybe included so best ask your insurance company before doing anything.

The alternative is to either source a second hand side window from a scraped car in a breaker's yard and get someone to fit it or ring a few windscreen replacement companies and price from the them the price of replacing it and mention that you will be paying for it yourself rather than going through your insurance.

I would just get one in a scrapyard, and ask there for the name of someone to fit it.

I do have glass coverage, however i currently have an outstanding claim from a rear end collision i was in a few months back. I had to claim from my own insurance and my insurance is currently trying to recover cost from the driver who hit me so don't know how that would affect putting in another claim

Shouldn't make any difference to put in a claim for glass damage if it is covered.
You will need to go to a repair garage (panel beater) to get the door fixed anyway and they will fit a new window also.

Would side glass count as a claim though?

    I don't know.
I only ever claimed for windscreen glass which with my insurance company at the time didn't affect NCB.
Best to call insurance company and weigh up your options.

It's a theft claim. The door and window should be covered and not affect the policy, though it will need to be declared.

OP you are screwed with the open claim if it's not resolved before renewal, the theft claim will have little impact.

I have already renewed sit the open claim. luckily it didn't affect it too much
Nothing was taken so would it still be classed as a theft claim?

Attempted theft or vandalism in my view.

Very same thing happened my 'Rolla, twice! First time I paid €40 at a breakers for the glass. Second time I couldn't find a window despite trying a number of breakers (three door E12's are rare enough in yards it seems) so the insurance covered a brand-spanking-new replacement.

They tried to steal your car and failed. If caught they'll be charged with theft. I haven't seen an exclusion in insurance policies for incompetent thieves.

Happy days on the open claim not having a big effect it's unusual.
