    Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone here could recommend a good laptop suitable for development. I don't play games so just development and browsing really.

No real requirements other than the above, though 13" minimum screen with a SSD would be nice!! Budget of around €1000.

    Thanks in advance

this imo is a good option (the 749 mid-range one but 699 with code SAVE50 up to Jan 1)
    http://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/laptops/inspiron-13-5000/spd/inspiron-13-5370-laptop?view=configurations

full 1080 IPS screen 13.3 inch
    256gb ssd
new quad-core i5 8250u cpu (50% perf increase over last gen with the 4 cores)
    8gb ram
    light at 1.4 kg

it's plastic not metal but nice plastic!
    some aluminium parts I think.

nice balance of portability and power with a good screen and SSD for fast loading.

if you want to go a level up to metal chassis and smaller bezels on screen you can get the first one on this page for 850 with the SAVE50. same spec otherwise

Sorry to jump on this thread, but do Dell do a January sale, or is this the best deal on offer at the moment? The only threads I can find talking about a Dell January sale are from 2005.

don't think they do. only the save coupons. you get up to 100 off but only on the top-end/top-priced products

Thanks for your advice. Was looking around at other laptops but decided to go with this one, went with the i7-8550 cpu though. Didn't see this message until after the 1st, so ended up using the 10% discount code they have until tonight and got it for 800

They are doing 10% off all laptops, excluding XPS until midnight tonight

Thanks for that. I ordered my laptop (an Inspiron 13 5379 2-in-1 with an i5-8250u, 8GB RAM and 256GB hard drive) on Saturday with the €50 off. I saw the new offer so rang them yesterday and they agreed to refund me the difference when the laptop arrives and I am happy with it.

I didn't realise Dell laptops were coming from China now, so delivery is going to take 10 days or so.

Ordered one a few days before Black Friday - took 3 weeks.

tbh there is not that much difference between the i5 and the i7 in this gen. i5 would have been fine.

only just over 5% in the benchmark tests.
    does no harm I guess.

would have personally gone for the metal one, 7000 series with i5 that you could have got for 800 or thereabouts also instead of i7 series 5000 plastic one.

Mine arrived today, ordered last Thursday so only took 8 days, wasn't expecting it until next week.

Mine (ordered December 30th) would have been delivered yesterday if there was someone to sign for it, but I'm collecting it from the courier's depot today. I see a weekend of patching, updating and installing in my future!
