I'm on the look out for a car for my partner. She really wants a Hyundai coupe, we seen a 2006 red one from a private seller in south Dublin and the car was in super condition, spotless and the mechanical order was top notch. We both like it however the problem is its red....Red makes these cars look abit too flashy imo. These cars have a long swooping bonnet and they sort of look like a mini Ferrari at the front with the shape of the lights which is kinda cool but it's screaming for attention in red. Would you choose a car in a colour you did not want because it was in excellent mechanical order? Just concerned it will get keyed in no time.

You’re concerned an almost 12 year old Korean car will get too much attention? Because it’s red?

It won’t. They’re a nice car, but steady on with the Ferrari associations there ;)

If you like it (despite being red, which looks great on that car IMHO) and the price makes sense, buy the car.

No offence intended, but an the hyundai coupe is not 'flashy' in any sense of the word, red or not.

As for looking like a Ferrari, you and anyone else who thinks that, need your eyes tested!

Choosing a car colour is totally personal IMO, if you like it, go for it, if not hold out for one in a different colour.

It's a stylish looking car which would be the best way to put it. Coupes sort of grab attention in the right or wrong colour.

If you are in the market for a 12 year old car of a particular model and you find a good one buy it. Don't worry about the colour.
Condition, service history, NCT etc are the important things.

(by the way I think they look nice)

I don't mean it litteraly, I'm not use to coupes and not sure what to think of them in terms of colours. The Ferrari comment was just a comparison to the shape of the head lights which sort of remind me. Of course no comparison to an Italian masterpiece.

I had a red Alfa 156 which really suited the car. I now have a BMW 5 series and red would look terrible on it.

It suits Hyundai Coupe so go for it if you like the car.

It prob only gonna cost you 2k so I wouldn't worry about the paintwork and it's prob gonna get crushed once you finish with it

What puts me off red is that it can fade if the car has not been given regular washes. Also an old wives tale is the cops play a game of snooker stopping cars and so red is the most common they stop...

Don't worry about it. The only reason to buy a Coupe is for the looks. Saw an 07 yesterday and thought "they've aged well"

A genuine issue with red paint over the years is that it fades (oxidises) like hell over the years.

Two toyotas and one alfa all faded very badly after about 8-10 years.

Worth checking that the car has NOT been over compounded by some monkey - check for areas with edges like around the petrol cap or roof gutters...

    ^^ This. ^^

I see one Hyundai Coupe in red frequently (owned by a co-worker) and that red is not really red anymore. Additionally, clearcoat peeled off here and there.

I've had two red cars, (both audis) and the paint didn't fade on either.

One other point...red cars are one of the most easily seen so arguably safer than others...

You'll get pulled over a lot if Gards are playing snooker,

My wife back in her much younger days went to one of the clairvoyant people .... Who told her she would kill a person while driving a red car.... needless to say we cannot have a red car. I don't for one moment believe this charlatan but we can't risk fate !!!!

Causes problems when at car hire desks ... at least once I have had to return to the office and ask for a different car !!!

... off topic but what a horrible thing to tell someone!!!!!...

I had a red Hyundai Accent. Got a black one after that. There was no difference.

I always wanted a Hyundai Coupe but then I got married and had kids....I've a Skoda Octavia estate now :D

Ohhh another tale from the old days..... the police used to play snooker ..... so if you were driving a red car your chances of being pulled were much higher than say a blue car ... and white cars ... they used to get off ;-)

Never heard of this snooker thing lol. They must have had a lot of time on there hands back in those days.

If she's not too fussy about age, get her an Audi TT in whatever colour. Probably pick up a slightly older car for similar money to this Hyundai. And you'll have a higher quality bus in every aspect.

Having said that, if you MUST go with this car, red suits them very well.

The paint used for cars is the same whatever the colour. I've seen lots of other colours peeling. Maybe it's just that red car owners are less likely to correctly care for the paint than the paint being an issue.

Despite me repeatedly telling my brother in law that you can't wash a car with dish soap, even buying them car shampoo, the paint on their 1 owner 2006 car is flaking off while we've older cars with perfect paint. The shampoo is still in their shed and the silver paint has issues.

We had a red 03 Coupe about 6 years ago, paint was already fading and flaky in spots at that point so I wouldn't hold out much hope in a 12 year old maintaining the paint work well. In saying that, the paint will be the least of your worries, never a more troublesome car have I known.

The paint on this particular coupe was fine with no panel lighter or darker then the other. However there was some T cut in the boot so maybe it was polished here and there to bring it up but it looked ok to me and I am a fussy type when it comes to paintwork.

Despite being engineered to be something better, I can’t see an old TT being as cheap to own as a Coupe. (Not counting tax or insurance in this)

A TT would be such a nicer car to have though. They just feel a bit special even for an old car, they still look great, I think they drive really well, and the interior is on a completely different level.

Something like a Mini First or a Mini One might suit as well if a smaller engine is a must.

The funny thing is there is someone where i work with a 06 or 07 red hyundai coupe who has put ferrari badges on it ,

I see a lot more colored cars these days thank goodness. The days of the silver, black and blue car is over. Its time the Irish lighten up, stop being so boring and bring proper colours back into cars. I drive a red/orange car and it looks great and gets a lot of complements. However to parrot what was said above and no offence intended nobody will think your a flash git driving a 12 year old hyundai.
