Motor Tax Refund - Log Book?

    Hi Folks,

I am applying for a motor tax refund. There are 4 full months left on the disc and I qualify for a refund as I'll be out of the state.

However, it says you need to return the log book. Have I read that correct? If I did return the log book, how do I prove I own the car? And better yet, how do I get the log book back? It would put me in a chicken and egg situation as I couldn't tax it until I got the log book back when I do come back.

I was going to try and sell the car while I'm away, as it will be parked up with the folks, but without a log book, I can't.

    Has anyone done this before?

The criteria for motor tax refund are below:

    http://www.housing.gov.ie/local-government/motor-tax/refunds/refunds

The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed* or sent permanently out of the state,
The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
A vehicle in respect of which a tax disc has been taken out has not been used in a public place at any time since the issue of the disc,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.

You cannot get a refund because you are not using the car or just temporarily leaving the state.

There was a thread here last week about that.
The person got worried about having sent off logbook. They rang tax office and they said the logbook would be returned in due course.
I would still be very wary of sending off the logbook tbh.

So, if it follows that he has to 'permanently' leave the state, what is to be done with the car?

Why not use tax as a selling point.

    Sell car.

    Which is covered by:

The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle.

I'm away, on business, from the state. You don't have to leave permanently.

So you do have to send off the log book. Thanks! Very odd, and I'm curious as to why. Is there some sort of scam one could run doing this? Best I can think of is get a refund, then sell the car. But you have to return the disc, so you couldn't hoodwink someone into thinking it was taxed and then get a refund a few days later.

True. I needed the car when I was here, put it up a week ago to see if I could shift before I left. I'm not overly pushed to sell it as I can do so upon my return. It's a car that has actually mildly appreciated in the past two years. Its listed on other forums, if someone is interested I can link them up with my family. Its the size of car that if tax is an issue, you wouldn't be buying it :pac:
