    Larry Gogan retires.
Muireann O' Connell gets the midday gig on Today FM.
2fm continue to gain on TodayFM who look to have lost his way.
Matt Cooper leaves TodayFM and goes to Newstalk.
Ian Dempsey leaves TodayFM and takes Paul Collins with him.

I know two of my predictions involve people leaving TodayFm but that's because the station seems a mess.

Nova to play ed sheeran and even less rock :)

I think Dara Quilty will get the midday slot on Today FM, with Brian Maher taking over the Big Ride Home and Andy Clarke taking over The Fix five nights a week.

I think Colm Hayes and Paddy Courtney might take over the Nova breakfast show at some point in 2018, with Kieran McGuinness permanently getting the Saturday night slot. I think Marty and Conor will stay with Nova, be it as a duo or separately.

    - A new radio station, DQFM, to launch with Dara Quilty as CEO, PD, music director, and producer and presenter of shows across the board.

    - Muireann O'Connell to finally get a weekday slot on Today FM. No other changes at the station.

Two radio giants to pass away. :-(

Yet another ex-2FM presenter will join Radio Nova.

Cathal Funge will get some weekly slot on Today FM (instead of the odd programs - like this week!).

Shelley Gray will get some weekly slot on Today FM (instead of the odd program).

There will be no new dance pirates in Dublin.

Connect FM will disappear (if it has not already), only to be replaced by Easy Radio.

8Radio.com's lineup in 2018 will include at least one new ex-Phantom presenter.

At least one presenter on 98FM will move to Today FM.

At least one presenter on Spin103 will move to 98FM.

4FM will replace their weekday breakfast team.

Larry Gogan to retire from 2fm.
Gay Byrne to shuffle off this mortal coil.
Dermot & Dave to be moved back to their old slot on Today FM.
Matt Cooper to leave The Last Word having imploded in a fit of political correctness outrage to concentrate on the 35 other balls he's juggling in the air.
Marion Finucane to literally croak it after a lifetime of fags

Very little on the RTE front.

They are not noted for radical or major change.

Nova to get a national fm licence!

    It's never going to happen.

FM104 maybe? They are the most listened to station in Dublin.

4FM will replace their weekday breakfast team.

Curious what makes you think that? I’d have thought PJ and Jim are one of their strongest performers (if not strongest?) and I don’t think 4FM have the money to throw at a “name”.

I will admit it was one of my wilder predictions! I suppose it was the idea that if 4FM were really desperate to gain more traction they might radically change their schedule, including the breakfast lineup - regardless of whether or not it was a good idea!

They might even make their biggest gamble by using a "name" - we are talking last throw of the dice scenario. As I said, it was one of my wilder predictions! I basically put down the first thoughts that came into my head - a type of brainstorming!

Newstalk will close or just reduce to a live daytime service, with possibly a music service after 7pm (like TXFM!!!)

Any reason newstalk would close, or indeed cut programming after 7? They are investing heavily in off the ball across all the communicorp brands it seems, it's probably one of few shows that is consistent on Newstalk. There's sponsorship and advertising running on the show too. Would seem strange to end broadcast at 7.

Be good if anyone makes a prediction if they give some rationale on it.

I'm thinking we might see Today FM struggle to find its identity, been listening a fair bit over Christmas while traveling around the country, not exactly the best time to make a judgement as programming is different then, but it seems a tad confused about what it is.

Depending on whether the BAI get off their arse and do anything with those potential new licenses. Radio Nova will apply and probably get one, unless 8 Radio manages to get in on the action.

Well if Denny O brian decided to stop pouring his money into newstalk it would go to the wall right away, the 3 million euro losses that communicorp made last year were because of newstalk. I don't think he will let it go tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Maybe Communicorp will run out of funds to keep the station at its current output. Are they getting anything back from Off the ball?

Do you think other stations will close?. What about the RTE Digital radio stations (already axing RTE News Now channel on Digital TV).

Matt Cooper to give off even more frequently about Trump, and to complete his transformation into fully fledged big girls blouse.

Not a chance. Communicorp has bottomless resources, if it's kept a limping 98fm afloat for years there's no way it'll close it's big brother newstalk.

    It's never going to happen.

FM104 maybe? They are the most listened to station in Dublin.

Being the most listened to according to JNLRs in Dublin bears no relevance to whether they'd get a national license whatsoever.

Nova are actively looking for a multi city or national license and offer something different to the market with a format that hasn't been done at that level yet - except for their own (quite successful) temp test broadcasts 'The Rock'.

FM104 aren't looking for it and don't offer something different/new.

    Easy choice for the BAI.

Nova aren't that much different from Today FM to be honest. And quite Dublin centric.

Is there a new national radio station to launch in 2018?

it's certainly possible - the BAI have made it clear in recent times that they're open to submissions with the details of the license being left open to the applicant to specify.

Eh? Musically, Nova are substantially different and far more specific (rock) than Today FM (quite broad - AC/CHM), and their focus has been much wider than just county Dublin for a number of years now.

Too high pitched for this poster, like that dude in charge of the Greens.

    Hard on the ears.

Nova do play a lot of non rock music.

Yes, you banged that drum in the "should FM104 be made national.." thread too. I've addressed it there.

This the same Dinny who earlier this year tried to offload lossmaking Newstalk onto INM for E10m or some such massively bizzare figure until the former CEO of INM had an independent valuation carried out on the station which showed just how bad deal they were being saddled with?

Probably starting tomorrow (2nd January) the news and current affairs on all the stations will be dominated by hospital trolleys. It will suddenly be a national emergency even though it is mostly ignored for the rest of the year.

It happens every January and lasts for two to three weeks.

I think that shutting down Newstalk would probably be the best thing to do at this stage. Even if you just wipe the smug smile off that back stabber Ciara Kelly's face.

Nova aren't that much different from Today FM to be honest. And quite Dublin centric.

So Nova shouldn’t get a national license because they are “Dublin centric”, but FM104 should.

I sometimes wonder if you are a wind up merchant.

It’s not going to close Newstalk. They are cutting it to the bone in preparation for offloading.

Adrian Serle is the group boss.

    Could News Corp be interested?

Neither is more Dublin/GDA centric than the other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 874 ✭✭✭More Music

But you seem to be using the fact that Nova are Dublin centric as reason for NOT giving them a national license.

While FM104 should get a national license, even though you say they are equally Dublin centric.

Adverse trading conditions for Digicel force Communicorp to have a firesale.

    2FM forced into cutbacks.

Lyric FM becomes Classical Music station again after firing RTE has-been DJs.

RTE/2FM hires Marty Whelan for new music programme targeted at under 25s.

Ryan Tubridy gets phone call from BBC telling them that they are not interested in losing listeners.

RTE needs bailout but government appoints a Bord Snip to deal with overpaid and undertalented management and on-air talent. Mass resignations follow but numbers and advertising revenue continue to tank.

    Regards...jmcc
