The way I usually do it myself is, define budget, watch/read reviews, select a few models I'm interested in (usually 3 to 5 different models, based on my needs and wants), test drive them all as much as I can, select the one model I actually prefer to drive/live with, go and see as many exemples of that particular model as possible, pick one or two, run background checks, go see them again with a trusted mechanic, pick one, haggle, and be done with it...

One model you may like would be suzuki swift, another one you may find to your liking is the VW up! (or skoda citigo, or seat mii, all 3 being the same car), renault twingo can be a contender as well... I'm sure I'm missing some... Anyway, good luck with your purchase and let us know what you've picked in the end ;)

Plenty of choice in that market Vw Up,I 10,KA etc. The Twingo is rear engined so it has extra steering lock which makes it pretty handy for parking and nipping around the city

The i20 would be a direct rival for the Yaris, with the Aygo competing with the i10. Im not a big fan if the current Yaris unless it’s the hybrid. The 1.0 engine is long in the tooth and unrefined compared to other 3 cylinder engines.

Kinda depends on what the budget is and what you want out of the car (space/refinement/equipment/looks)

    Have you considered an EV?

If you are only doing city driving and not a lot of miles daily, an EV would be ideal.

After seeing the Hyundai i10 today..... waaaaay too small.

Picanto any good? It looks abit bigger!

The Picanto and i10 are sister cars so one is not going to be much bigger than the other. The i20 is bigger than the i10 and it's sister car the Kia Rio is bigger than the Picanto/i10.

    What's the budget?

    8-10k ideally, petrol

Reliable, sturdy drive but looks matter!

I could go to 12k if it made a huge difference.

I have double vision looking at cars by now. Id pay you Colm to go get me one!

The "city cars" are small in reality they don't look too safe! Haven't driven in quite a few years as was not necessary/ travelling so despite having a licence over ten years my insurance will be high as i've zero NCB. Mainly want it for Dublin city.

My last car was a 1.3 1994 Mazda 121 (lol) she was a legend!

    Thanks so much

    Or a total wild card

These have been replaced by a new model just recently. Could be ex rental, could be damage repaired, (as could any used car) or could be just a genuine car. Worth considering all the same.

Stretching to €12k something like this might be an option.

For 10 to 12k you can get a good Nissan leaf 4 years old easily. High quality car with minimal running costs and very large and comfortable compared to your original city car ideas.

Fiesta is also a good alternative as you state. Go take a look and drive one. Personally I loved the leaf to drive. The automatic nature makes it perfect for city driving as well where you will use zero power when your stationary...
