    Hey Everyone,

We had our car in the garage there last week on friday as the engine was heating up and the oil light was coming on and off randomly.

The replaced a water pump and put a new timing belt in plus 2 foil something or other, I can't find the receipt for what they actually are.

Since then last Saturday I sent the Mrs to get some oil for the car as the oil light was still on even though the dipstick said it was about 75% full.

She picked up some 5w30 instead of 10w40, I didn't notice and put it in and them since then The oil light is on constantly and a grey/blue smoke is coming out of the exhaust if you rev the car hard or go over around 60/70 kph. If you go slow and are gentle on the accelerator is doesn't really happen. If you leave the car on it slow revs to 10 and back down.

I've read online that as long as it was fully synthetic the oil shouldn't cause problems so I'm not sure what the problem is?

    Any idea or advice?

The car is an automtic 1.8 2004 Vauxhall zafira.

    Thanks

How much oil did you add?

How much oil did you add?

    About 2 litres

Strange thing though, I drove her today and the oil light is off and there is no smoke coming out the exhaust just steam from the cold air. Granted I didn't put her under strain and was gentle on the accelerator by not going over 50 kph.

Could the problem have fixed itself?

Hard to know, might now be too much oil added, the capacity would be about 4 litres or so, if you were at the minumum on the dipstick it would take about 1 litre or less to bring it up to the max point. Have you done any reading on the oil since you added it?

Just done it there and it's full according to the dipstick.

...the dipstick said it was about 75% full...
    Mark Min-to-Max take 1 litre.

    About 2 litres
    Flooded.
Engine overfilled about 1.5~1.7L. High pressure(on revs) push oil to cylinders and burning.
Would recommend to drain all oil, replace oil filter, fill proper oil to the mark(keep it between Min-Max marks)

No. Take the car back to your mechanic.

Piston rings could worn out and when you added thinner oil 5w30 it sucked the oil into the chambers and oil burned. Did you need to top up oil frequently?
