I’m driving through Bray town with my OH. We both noticed a 40km/h speed limit sign and we’re both wondering is a legally binding sign.

I thought the speed limit zones were 30,50,60,80,100,120. I never saw 40km/h before.

    Is there works going on?

No works going on. We are driving down a particular street and there are permanent, fixed poles at both ends.

They have those in Wicklow town too. They are permanent signs that were put up when they changed a raft of speed zone boundaries a few weeks back.

Next there will be a 37km/h sign outside churches, a 34km/h sign outside graveyards and a 32 km/h sign outside the vets. What in the jaysus is wrong with a flat 30km/h for areas it needs to be slow and 50 for those next in line?

    When were these brought in?

Is there any chance we might see 110 and 130 zones for dual carriageways and motorways? In all fairness 120 is far too slow for a motorway and most DCs should be at least 110 - after all in the UK all DCs are 70 mph (113 km/h) and thanks to the UK's APCO guidelines you won't get a ticket in England or Wales unless you exceed 79 mph (127 km/h).

Theres a segment down the south of the country thats already 110 is there not?

Yeah, speed limits apply in tunnels as well.

Just to point out, the Rules of the Road is not a legally binding document. Its a 'plain English' interpretation of the law. It's not wrong, but you wouldn't argue a court case holding one and it doesn't cover everything. Likewise, bye-laws can be passed by local councils as is the case here.

I was just posting a screen shot of the page, to show that a 40km/h speed limit does exist.

Lads, any posted speed limit is valid and must be adhered to, it's not a rocket science.

    20, 30, 40 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 are the options. It is also possible to do advisory limits ending in '5'.

So if I stick a 5km/h sign up on the M50 it's valid? It's easy to make a complaint sign.

The correct byelaws needs to be enacted for the limit to be valid. It's illegal to drink and drive but too many people get off.

    Not quite.

This is an example if an advisory speed limit

And this is the legally binding sign, further along the road.

    Advisory's advisory, nothing else.

Speed limit sign is round, with red circle at the outer edge.
