From what year (roughly) did one need to seek planning permission for putting in a septic tank?? Was it from the 60s when planning laws first came into being?
Our house has a septic tank that was put in in the early 70s, at that time, should planning have been sought, or was it the norm/legal to just belt on with it?

The original NSAI recommendations came in in 1975....

Not sure if this is of any help, but here's a link to them...

1975? Wonderful. So when our solicitor Said that we have a septic tank put in in 1970 with no planning permission, it’s really not something that needed to be discussed at all because planning permission for septic tanks in 1970 was unnecessary?
Obviously I am aware that the septic tank needs to be reviewed and brought up to today’s standards, and that this does require planning.. .. but it’s not an immediate issue

Oh it goes further back than that....

In the 1950's, as far as I can see, the Fianna Fail government gave grants for 2-chamber septic tanks. Conveniently, the cheque could be collected from the local (FF) TD's office....

Just wondering why your solicitor has told you this? Are you considering selling?
Otherwise, why is it an issue?

We’re looking to put our house on separate deeds to the family farm, and trying to do an equity release for some renovations (the renovations have nothing to do with the septic tank). In a letter the solicitor has drafted to the bank, he has basically said he is in the process of putting the house on a new folio (one of the conditions of drawdown), but that we have an extension and a septic tank that have no planning. But the extension is small, to the rear of the house, and with a lower roof than the original house, so wouldn’t have required planning, and I was just wondering what the story was with the septic tank. Basically I want to get this done as quickly as possible, and it seems that he’s not in as much of a rush as me!
