So have an older BMW that an putting through the test. Only problem is the speedo doesn't work. Have checked wiring, sensor ect and no joy and due to the age can't source a working speedo
I have a GPS speedo. Am I able to stick this onto the gauge and have it pass the nct??

Read through the regulations and all it says is that a speedometer is to be fitted, working and seen from the drivers seat.

Thanks and happy Christmas to all

Not sure, it won't function on the rolling road type test they do but it will be functional on an actual road if they tested it there.

How would a GPS speedo work in a stationary test?

The guidelines only says that the speedometer function check is limited to the movements of the vehicle in the test area.
Will give them a ring when they open back up after the holidays

Most likely a fail, page 28
    https://www.ncts.ie/media/1004/nct-manual-july-2014.pdf

Put it through anyway - it may pass, or fail on something else.

Don't say anything, they might not even notice.

it won't do, it needs a distance reader as well as speed.

No. A working odometer is not an NCT requirement. It's not in the manual

I'd say it definitely needs to be operational it's vital for safe driving / staying below the legal limit. But more importantly they will need to know the exact mileage the vehicle has covered since it's last test.. when a vehicle passes the current mileage. is printed on the disc. In k/m And if the car was UK import it gives the miles ..
If it was me I wouldn't expect to pass and I would try to rectify before test..
Even if it fails you will have 28 days to re test. It's not the end of the world if you fail but speedometer is a vital piece of equipment

i'm skeptical, kilometreage or whatever we call it now is recorded in their records surely.

It's on the manual. They do state that the odometer is just recorded, but that's it. They don't care if its the same, more or even less than the previous value recorded

Yes...what an absolute waste...people would pay money to access that database if it was accurate and correctly managed.

They collect the information and then do nothing with it...like wtf?

You do exactly what's on your desk and you are not paid to think how this affects other departments or people. No my job mentality. Also, if you now do or suggest something, you are leaving yourself open to reprimand when something goes wrong. It is the reason people don't clear snow outside their house, they think if they do they are liable when someone falls.
LEAP card took ages to implement and cost an absolute fortune.
Another example is that you have to put in your insurance number when taxing your car online, but you can put in jsjdjsk12345%-#-£
And it will accept it, because no connection exists between insurance and tax.
In Germany it is physically impossible to not have tax and insurance at the same time, each is checked at either end.

What do you want the NCT tester to do?

Investigate every car that seems like it should have a few more miles on the clock between services?

They can’t share it due to data protection laws.

Ah yes, the good old "data protection" laws, that don't actually protect anybody or anything, but just make it more difficult for everyone concerned to make a proper job of things.
