hitachi and walker are terrible brands. Better pay a bit more and have the tv for 6-8 yrs

Best of luck with it, but sadly Hitachi isn't the great TV brand it once was. The parents got one in the early 80s and it just kept going. Sadly it's just a makeyuppy brand now.

Don’t know about that. My 50 inch state of the art Sony smart TV that’s used about twice a month and is 3 years old died yesterday. Absolutely disgusted with it. Will be replacing it with this Hitachi.

You should be able to excercise your consumer rights on this one.

I think Sony have 5 year parts guarantee if you have a receipt

I'm going TV hunting, anyone see anything around 800 mark?

Buy a Hisense, much better TV than Hitachi and still relatively cheap.

Yeah, the mother in law has a hisense and it's very impressive. Much more bang for your buck than with Hitachi.

Richer Sounds have a 40” Samsung 4K for £350. Would happily pay the extra for 6 year warranty, brand name and Richersounds service.

Yeah, but to be fair, it's 40 vs 43"

Speaking from experience I'd take a hit on the 2-3 inches for a much higher quality TV set. Hitachis speakers alone are diabolical.

Just because the Sony wasn't good to you doesn't automatically make the Hitachi or Walker good brands. Have heard more than once lately that Hitachi are a shadow of their former selves. Probably just another generic Turkish made model now with the Hitachi name stuck on. Walker may actually be a better bet?

If you’re not satisfied with 3 inches less then there is an LG 43 for 369.

Hitachi and walker are made by Vestel in Turkey afaik...

I was tempted by the 43 Hitachi, but I'm holding off for now.

I know it's made by Vestel, and that Hitachi is now just like Sharp, JVC, Sanyo, Philips etc, a brand that's been bought to fool the customer into thinking they are getting a top brand when they aren't. They sold their badges years back, and a lot of them are all the same under different cases.

Reading some owner reviews on the Hitachi, I think the picture is ok, but the sound is meant to be poor. And the software is very outdated and not slick and fast like a lot of the proper tv brands.

But it's a 4K tv, and for the price, it's still a very good deal.

How does the Hitachi compare to the LG 43UJ634V for €100 more at Curry's?

It doesn't compare, go for the LG, better quality panel, better smart features and HDR.

Like others have mentioned imo Hisense and LG offer the best value for money in the lower range of 4k TV's and are a lot better than any Vestel tv.

Thanks, what about the Toshiba 43U5766DB 43-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV with Freeview Play for about €345 delivered?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-49U5766DB-49-Inch-Ultra-Freeview/dp/B075KG5K14/ref=lp_14333909031_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1514297770&sr=1-3&th=1

Would this be as good as the LG 43UJ634V?

Remember that the LG has the satellite built in also, so you can pick up BBC etc.
if you have signed off Sky as we did a few years ago.

I'm with you. Just better to compare like with like. Got the LG 4K HDR one for +/- €520 a few months ago and very happy with it, especially the sound. Bought a 42" LG SMART 3D 5 years ago and it's still going strong.

I've looked through the specs on the LG at Curry's and there's no mention of built in satellite?

I bought a pair of LG TVs (49 and 43 for us and in-laws) in Currys and they both have the Satellite tuner....the 49 was the 49UJ701V but I checked the 43 and see it was the 43UJ635V.
Not sure about the 634. They seem similar but there must be some difference....https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/comparison/baf71ab61

Thanks for that, it looks like it probably does have a Sat tuner. Although I already have a Humax Satbox, having the built in Satellite would be handy, plus I'm not sure if the UK version would have Saorview Play.

For whatever reason, they don't advertise them as having satellite, but both mine have.

Thanks, I just reserved the LG 43UJ634V at Curry's, I just hope they honour the price tomorrow, as they close at 7 and I'm not going to be able to make it there tonight. My reservation says it's good until tomorrow, so I assume I should be OK.

Can't see anything standing out on the specs

Edit: just compared both models on LG own website and its listing zero differences.

Don’t know whether to pull the trigger. I’ve a 40inch plasma (3D). Goes to 1080p etc. Have it around 6/7 years . It’s starting to turn on and off and back on every now and again. Would it be a good upgrade?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Ones a newer model than the other. Think they went from one leg in the centre to 2 legs or vice versa.

I am surprised to see Philips mentioned on that list. Does it no longer manufacture TV's "in house"? Its products have always been of high quality and durable, particularly hi-fi equipment.

No, they let vestel make the entry level models....like 15 years ago and then sold the whole TV Unit to TPV Technology in chunks starting about 10 years ago.

They're big in lighting and making healthcare scanners like CTs but everything else with their name on it is dirt, especially grooming products, pure garbage.

I've a Panny plasma too. The g10. Absolutely brilliant set. Take a look at the power consumption difference between a plasma and a LCD though.

I doubt you could get it fixed cheaply even though it's probably a fivers worth of capacitors on the way out. Someone would probably charge you a packet to fix it.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, either get the LG 43 inch or ride my luck with this Plasma. It’s been faultless up until recently. It only shuts off and on maybe 3-4 times a week. But then again the next time it might not come back on

Try the Panasonic repair centre on Nangor Rd. I had a few things fixed by him, quite reasonable, deposit to look at it then he quotes to fix. If you have no cost for delivery/collection I'd say it could be reasonable enough. He's a real electronics type guy, worked in a TV factory in the 80's.

    I have a hitachi 4k 50 inch tv.

Great tv for the price. Smart os is great. Plex is on it. A lot of the premium brands dont have it.

Sounds is good and it looks great to.ihad a hitachi previously which i bought for Argos in 2010 and got 6 years out of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,196 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

AFAIK, you can only buy Hitachi tv in argos, it's an exclusive brand to them now. They own the rights to the brand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,469 ✭✭✭ibFoxer

I have a 48" Hitachi i picked up on sale earlier this year- love it. It's serving exactly the purpose i bought it for:

-Main viewing area where there's no need for HDR (Sky box, Netflix, Hulu, HBO)
-Criticism of sound is across the board with MOST flat panel TV's, always use an external sound option
-Compared to my "higher end" LG, there's little between them picture wise, few extra bells on the LG granted, but nothing to make or break

Look, for the price, of you want a tidy price with a quality picture it's absolutely worth it. Tight budgets can really benefit from it, if you can stretch a little more, Hisense for the extras would be a noble purchase too.

-This past year a group of us watched Wrestlemania on the set and they were blown away. Picture is quality, even on SD.

Thanks to all the advice here, in the end I got the LG 43UJ634V at Currys for 399. The sale seems to still be on, maybe not the greatest sale, but not a bad price either. So far I'm very happy and I can confirm it does have a Satellite tuner.

I read through the manual, but I have a couple of questions if anyone has a similar LG TV:

Is there an easy way to switch between Satellite and Terrestrial TV. From home there's an option for Live TV, but that brings you to the one you used last - Satellite or Terrestrial. I can switch back using the menu, but it won't be an easy option for other members of the family.

Is there a type or size limit for the external USB storage device? Can you use a portable USB HD and is there a max storage size?

Is there any easy way to edit the Satellite channels, as it's is FTA, not FreSat? (It looks like I may need to redo my setup listing my country as the UK to get FreeSat, but I don't know what that will do to my Saorview.)

Finally Curry's website advertises Saorview Play - "Saorview Play to help you catch up. Offering access to over 60 TV channels and 12 HD channels, Saorview Play also lets you scroll back in your TV guide to watch shows from the last seven days on selected channels.", which doesn't seem to exist and if it did, there wouldn't be 60 TV and 12 HD channels.
