Weird low oil pressure problem

My fiance is having a weird problem with her 04 Micra relating to the low oil pressure light.

For the last week or so, when the car is cold and RPMs are low or at idle e.g. stopped at lights or rolling up to a stop in neutral or lower RPMs, the low oil pressure light flickers on and off.

When the car has warmed up to temperature after 5 mins this completely goes away and doesn't return, only happens for a few minutes after cold starts when car has been sitting a few hours.

Started to worry me yesterday however when on a short 5 minute drive the same happened but accompanied by a horrible grinding noise but ONLY at lower RPM. Though again once car had warmed up the problem disappeared completely!!

Any ideas? We're heading to Australia in two weeks so she doesn't want to spend any money on it, but still needs to try sell it... I'm worried it's the oil pump but maybe just a bad filter?

    Thanks

Has the car been regularly serviced? Sounds like a build up of sludge in sump. The viscosity of oil in s higher at lower temps

. I'd suggest oil filter change and if there is an additive you can put into the oil to break down sludge.

2004 micra is probably scrap value only so wouldn't be spending a lot on it.

Have you checked the oil level with the dipstick? If it hasn't had an oil and filter change in a while you'd be well advised to get that done first. Oil pressure is generated by the compression of oil between the crankshaft journals in engine block. If there is wear here you will have oil pressure issues but also a very noisy knock form bottom end of the engine. As you don't mention this I would say go with the former and get back to us if problem persists. Of you're trying to save dollar Google oil change for Micra, it's handy enough if you've a spare hour
