Home security for your car

I got unlucky and some young lad keyed my car in the driveway. Pretty sure it was a friend of my next door neighbour but I cannot prove it. I will never leave my gates in my driveway open again. They are the only young lads around my area and everyone else are OAP's. Of course I could be wrong but I'm 80% sure it was something to do with them. I already have a movement sensor light which comes on when you walk past the house but this didn't stop him whoever he was. A proper repair of my bonnet would be a complete respray for €450...

Now I want to install a camera inside my porch door or inside one of the rooms upstairs aimed out the window recording 24/7 incase this sh!t stick feels he wants to target my car again. Any ideas of a cheap setup? I'd prefer not to drill holes on the outside of the house and start wiring through the walls etc. A simple indoor setup aimed out the window will work fine I think.

What security measures do you have to protect your car?

I have cameras at the front (in porch and outside on wall) and PIR activated lights in the drive and the side of the house.

Just note that if you put the camera in the porch (i.e. behind glass) it will only work best during daylight. To see in the dark, they send our a red light that reflects back off the glass at night so you may have a great shot of a reflection on your glass.

Outside is best, the higher the better.

I want to be discreet as possible with it since If this kid comes back again I'll get a clear shot of him without him knowing that camera is there.. No way he could have reached my car without my sensor light coming on. It came on and he didn't give a fck. I have the car backed up as close to the front of the house as possibe to the point it's about 3 inches away from my front porch door right now. Gates are locked to. I cannot let anything like this ever happen again. There is always something when there is young teenagers next door to you with 4 or 5 of his mates hanging around 7 days a week until 10 o'clock at night!

I got this myself. Managed to get it for E189 on a black Friday deal.

Super easy to install if you already have a sensor light installed as is just replaces it, didn't even have to drill new holes.

This is the view I have of my drive way. Alerts when people come in the driveway and automatically records it.

I like your gates, you won't jump over them so easily.

I bought a cheap eBay one that uses WiFi and an SD card. I now have 3 of them. Only cost €30. Incredible setup. App on the phone I can live watch, remote use and playback recordings. Quality is decent.

I had a similar problem one night last summer. Parts were stolen off my car on my driveway overnight. It’s not nice.
I installed a sensor light and also beefed up the alarm on the house. But I would like to put up a camera too when I get around to it.
I was looking at the Nest outdoor cameras. They seem to be very highly rated and are pretty simple to set up. Minimal drilling etc. Only thing is, it does require a small monthly subscription to use some features, as any recordings are stored in the cloud.

All you need is a POE IP camera and some cat5/6 cable back to your capture device (dvr, pc, etc).

Also get an alternative quote for the respray, 450 for a bonnet is absolutely insane. I got a full bonnet respray and a bumper repair for half that recently.

The problem with cameras up high is you won’t see faces.

In many cases you won’t see faces regardless as they’ll have hoodies / hats on etc. It’s more of a deterrent than anything. Plus many of these cameras will send you an alert to your phone if it detects movement in your driveway. This might require experimentation / tweaking of sensors though especially if your house is in a busy area... you’ll be getting alerts every time a cat walks past.

Yeah, piece of vermin I found in my house a while back, when I checked the cameras he had the hood up well before he came in the gate..he was unlucky he chose to call when I was home..think he’s still in the wheelchair..:D

Picked up an Annke 8 channel DVR with 4 cameras for 119 sterling from Amazon black Friday.

All cameras have motion detect it sends me an email and also setup to forward to slack via DM.sends three attached images of whatever movement picked up.

    Very happy with it.

OP take a look at Hikvision cameras as they currently have a very good choice of surveillance equipment. One of the best features in their cameras is the IR which leads to a very good clear picture at night.
