How can I know how many GPUs can a mobo run?

I have seen some specs of old boards, where if you connect a GPU to a Pcie, the other Pcie slot is not usable for another GPU. You cannot use 2 GPUs on one board. How do I know if I can connect more than 2 GPU's to an old MOBO? What specification defines that?

It's pretty much pointless connecting more than 2 GPUs these days. Perhaps for mining but you'd be better off with a dedicated miner.

As for Xfire/SLI - just look up the chipset on the board and it's spec.
