Eir FTTH Voip phone settings?

Got a surprise last minute appointment for FTTH installation and finally got connected. Technician was in a hurry to leave and didn't connect the phone. Just told me to plug it into the modem as he was going out the door.
I've done this, but there's no dial tone - just an engaged type of beeping. I've tried 2 phones now and same thing. I got a text from Eir to say that my phone is active. Are there some settings that need to be applied to get this to work?

As far as I know they're supposed to update the settings from their end.
Ring their tech support number ASAP before they're gone completely for Xmas.

Also try rebooting the modem in case it has picked up settings.

Thanks. No phone to ring them on at the moment. I tried rebooting the modem earlier, but nothing changed. Will give it another go.
Do you happen to know if the 1901 number is free from a mobile? I doubt I'd be able to afford the call if I'm kept on hold as long as I've been trying to get through over the last few weeks.

You may be stuck from today onwards as they're on holidays over Xmas.

I'd suggest trying the Talk to Eir forum.

Oh, also as you've got VoIP rather than a TDM/POTS based landline, you can access it via their app.
If you've an Android or iOS phone, just download the Eir talk app from the AppStore/PlayStore and log in with your myEir account details.

There's also an app for Windows and macOS desktop.

    You can then make/receive calls.

As far as I am aware, yes the 1901 number's free from all phones.

Thanks for that - will try to get on to them now.

Try the app though! It might sort your problem over Xmas.

    Landline via app :

    Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.witsoftware.eirTalk&hl=en

    Apple:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.witsoftware.eirTalk&hl=en

You'll need to setup your 'my eir' account first, that involves going to https://my.eir.ie/register

You'll need your account number, phone number / reference no and all of that stuff.

Tried the 1901 number - doesn't recognise my account or number and tells me the service is closed for any other queries.
I will install the app on my Android phone - thanks for that. I have the myeir account already, but it doesn't offer any help or troubleshooting to get the voip connected. It tells me the technician will have set it up on his visit! Ah well, at least I have internet.

It often takes these companies several days to get everything up and running on their various systems.

I don't think you can edit tg VoIP settings yourself on the F2000 gateway. it's done remotely by Eir.

The VoIP apps don't have to be configured. If the service is active, it just works with your MyEir log ins.

I have VOIP, it doesn't have dial tone, it works from silence

My phone had a beeping sound, like the engaged tone of old, and wasn't able to make or take calls.

Have just got it sorted now - happy days! I kept on trying the 1901 number and got through in the end. The settings had to be sent to my modem/phone manually. They were supposed to go automatically but the system hasn't been working correctly over the last few weeks. That's what the CS agent said anyway.

OP, Great to see it's up and running!

They're probably still having some teething issues with VoIP provisioning automation. They're apparently going to be migrating everything slowly over to the platform. So new FTTC (VDSL) orders are also getting VoIP by default.

The old landline tech will be gradually phased out, so the first step is to get as many people off the old network as possible. They're doing fairly significant moves to integrate voice services into the IP networks.

As long as you can still plug in a phone and get a dial tone and a reliable service, I doubt most people would really care about the technology running the service behind the scenes.

The big issue being faced by all telcos at the moment is TDM switching systems (classic digital telephone exchanges) are reaching the end of their life expectancy. They've been upgraded over the years but the technology is still basically 1980/90s digital using pulse code modulation, circuit switching and time division multiplexing. VoIP is far more flexible tech and also doesn't require nearly as much specialist hardware. You can so almost all of it in generic servers with software.

If you're concerned about loss of service in a power cut a small UPS battery back up will cover yo for quite a few hours.

I think the Eir version is configured to send the same tones as a landline normally does.

VoIP is just the technology carrying your voice signals. It can have any tones you like but it's best to stick with the system of tones people are used to, particularly where you're plugging in PSTN analogue phones.

That's very interesting - thanks. I'll be looking into that in the new year. That was the one minor concern I had with moving from the old technology. Other than that, as you say, I don't really care where it comes from. I still like having a landline though.
