Builder acting the maggot

Had a builder quote for some work and he has completed it.

Paid everything that was quoted for.

Builder brought in a sub contractor. I've paid the builder but the builder hasn't passed money to sub contractor.

Sub contractor is now contacting me looking for the money plus an extra € 1500

Sounds like the builder has left the sub contractor high and dry. Builder not communicating with me, won't give me account statement.

Caught in the middle of this, bad form from the builder. Not really my issue but feel for the sub contractor.

What do I do here? Tell sub contractor to stop contacting me and to go back to the guy that brought him in?

none of this has anything to do with you.

stay out of it and tell the sub contractor the same, he should really know who he gets into bed with if he is bidding on jobs

Report to gardai as possible fraud.
If anything it gets a pulse number and car file for future use if required.

Tell the sub that you paid the contractor. His contract is with the builder, not you.
Tell him you sympathize with him and have made a complaint about the Builder to the gardai.

Tell the subbie that his contract was with the builder and not you.

I've been shafted a few times by builders (your first job is always based on trust). Never in a million years would I contact the client to look for my payment.

    +1
Your contract is with the main builder, the sub-contractors missing payments isn't your problem I'm afraid, as much as its sad to see somebody left high and dry

where do you get this idea. no scamming going on . just a builder that wont pay the sub.

what will the guards do. its a civil matter and no crime has taken place.

    OP
politely tell the sub that you have no dealing with him and that you owe him nothing. be sympathetic but firm.
    this isn't your debt

This is the only thing you can do. Imagine the admission of liability issues if you did give the sub contractor some money?

The subbie will know full well who he needs to be chasing for money, don't entertain this nonsense.

The civil matter is with regards to the payment to the main contractor not reaching the sub contractor. So I agree with you on that part. .

But, the reason for the report to the gardai is that if this is a scam (trying to charge the OP twice) the this is fraud and that’s a criminal matter.

The reason for reporting is as follows :
    1. The sub contractor knows you are serious
    2. If it is indeed a scam, they they may back off from the OP and be stopped.

I’ve seen this happen before in Dublin. The gardai would actually contact my company asking if. Wh are on our radar or list of registered contractors etc (I am in a regulatory line of work). I have actually inspected properties alongside the Garda in very similar situations.

I agree with you in principle but I think its a bit early to claim that is what is happening. a simple its not my problem will do for now.
if the sub came back again and started looking for the money again then I would think its time to get more serious.
