    Link

Seems fairly straightforward thankfully - €600 towards the cost. Doesn't appear to be any restrictions on specific suppliers which is what I feared they might do.

Good deal I think? (Except for this of us that purchased second hand pre 2018!)

That would cover most people though.

Company car drivers? And then SMBs run out of a home office that purchase a van *cough*

Of course it should be provided for everyone who buys an EV.

Shame its not a scheme that could be applied for retrospectively.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭jeremy_g

yeah, that is a shame, it is only for cars purchased in 2018 onward.

Tough luck for people buying secondhand or ex demo cars in 2017.

What I am most happy about is that its not tied to SIMI. You can import a used car and register it yourself or buy privately and it will still be eligible for the grant.

Everything considered I think its a decent scheme and a decent amount. Depending on who you get it shouldn't cost much, if anything, to install a home charge point.

I give it the thumbs up.

I don't think it makes sense to add business to the scheme. They have the Accelerated Capital Allowance scheme. You can't butter both sides of the bread! :)

It's a shame really though that there is nothing in it for apartment owners. The requirement to wire back to the owners fuse box would make it prohibitive. I can understand why though. What was announced is good though.

It would be good to see a communal charger scheme rolled out for the likes of apartments as well.

1: sparks know you are getting up to 600 lids so that is the floor price
2: survey required/full elec inspection..blah blah blah... more shekels: my estimate was 3k so the free item on the wall will make a grand bird nest in 2018

Enjoy the festive season and thanks for all the insights in 2017.

You can get any spark you like as long as they are registered. Most of them wont know what a charge point is not to mind know about the grant for it which you apply for, not them.

All you need them to do is provide a signed cert. You can buy the materials (cable, charger, RCBO) yourself and if he spends more than an hour "plugging" those in and signing the cert he needs to explain himself!

If you go for the all inclusive approach expect to pay around €900 for that as they will add margin on the materials as well. Up to you what direction you go but if you put in some effort yourself it will be possible to do it for free (or very close to it).

There is a little bit more than an hours work in wiring in a charge point.
Wire the point, wiring back at the board for the new rcbo. If you use a swa cable it will have to be glanded. Carry out the test and fill out the test sheet.
    It all adds up.

It may have to be handled separately, via some sort of national scheme rather than house by house. Also, if you have a sympathetic management company, you can wire back to your own meter (and thus utilise this grant) however I  suspect legislation is needed to force them to engage with you (e.g. open up access to cable trays etc.)

Not much more than an hour to be honest if its being mounted on the outside wall of the house.
Each job will be different of course and if you are digging trenches and using SWA cable it will cost more, but I would suggest thats not the majority.

Most will be simply mounting it on the outside wall of the house which is 4 holes to mount the unit, run the cable back to the distribution board and wire that end. Its not at all difficult or time consuming. Give it 2hrs plus a call out charge if you want to cover yourself, but still not hundreds involved (<€200)

I'm annoyed to see that on street private parking is blocked in the same way.

For instance my install which is wired back to my meter and cost substantially more than a standard driveway installation would receive zero subsidy.

Maybe if the govt put in more SCP's it would help! :p
    I'll get my coat!

If I bought a EV privately I wonder how I can show them that?

The grant is tied to your electricity supply (MPRN) so if you are talking about selling to your wife and you already have claimed on your MPRN it won't work.

But if you have never claimed before and the car did not avail of the free eCars charge point (i.e. it was a used import when first registered in Ireland) and you want to put in a charge point now you could, in theory, sell to your partner and claim the grant.

Will they be tying it to the MPRN of the vehicle registered address?

With the old free charger you could install it at a different location if your own was unsuitable. I.e. install it at your parents house.

I'm planning to buy my other half's EV and apply for the grant at our private home. I've read through the website and don't see why this wouldn't work, we've never applied for a home charger grant before. Is there any reason this wouldn't be acceptable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46 umbauk

I receive my car tomorrow, but got the car charger installed in December so I miss out on the grant - doh! I guess I could technically get a second charger installed with the grant or sell my current one and buy another? :)

There will probably be a few people in this boat in the coming year - expect to see more second-hand EV chargers on DoneDeal! :)
