Wondering what's the story if a relative leaves a U.K. reg car in Ireland, taxed and insured in his name, can it be driven by his sister brother in law ???
Will they be done by revenue.
My brother in law is "leaving" an A6 so he can use it when visiting us and his parents. Can I drive it.

My understanding is that it is illegal for an Irish resident to drive a foreign registered car here unless their circumstances have been approved by Revenue.

Also how do you plan on being insured to drive it here?

Yea everything will be taxed insured and MOT, his parents are getting on and he comes more often, it would be easier if he left his a car here. He can fly in on Friday back Monday morning, won't have to go get car hire every time.
Its just if I was dropping the car at airport or train station would I be done.

Yes, fine of the VRT amount and a percentage on top. If revenue suspects that you are using the car they have more power than the Gardai and can enter property to remove it.

As said there are very specific requirements for an Irish resident to drive a foreign registered vehicle and a family members car won't meet the requirements.

If he's not a permanent resident of Ireland, has he told the insurer that? If there is an accident in the car and they aren't aware of a material fact like that, it more than likely wouldn't be covered.

Insurance wont probably has a finite amount of time the car can be out of the country. If he has been out of the country for more than 12 months then import it without paying VRT and tax/insure it here.
