Citroen/Peugeot rear beam axle issues

    Hi

I've got a Xsara which is rattling and banging at the rear and also sqeuaking/creaking.

I've ordered some axle mounts to solve the problem. However, the rear axle bearings have never been replaced since new in the car. I'm aware that they are a 10yr service item that was never done by owners.

It was/is a bad design and water ingress causes lots of problems when it gets past the bearing seal. The axles had problems which were too problematic to resolve and has resulted in a thriving industry which supply refurbished axles for these cars - if the car was not scrapped instead!

However, I'm in a position whereby I want to see if my axle is shot completely - it probably is, but I want to do some actual checks to see if it actually needs the work done - if I can get away with replacing the axle mounts to stop the bangning noise, then I can turn up the radio for the squeaks/creaks.

Can anyone help me out here by answering the below questions:

    1. Other than a squeak/creak are there any other signs that the rear axle bearings need replacing? Looking for things to check, measure, etc. (e.g. I could tell that the front needed doing as the gap between top of tyre and wheel arch was less that in old photos - showing that it was sagging)
    2. Is there any harm in driving it on if there are just squeaks/creaks (which seem to be intermittent in their loudness - weather related?)?
    3. Am I being silly by replacing front suspension and rear suspension mounts, but not refreshing the rear axle.
    4. What is the camber on the rear wheels? I've got to get front aligned after this work. Could I ask them to measure the camber (probably can do this at home myself) and if it is out then I know I'll need an axle swap.
    5. Can not replacing the bearings/axle result in a major failure, or does it just increase the camber on the tyres increasing wear?
    6. Could I check the bearing using a stethoscope? Not sure how to get sufficient movement to check for rumbling.

    Thanks.
