Irish health insurance cover UK surgery cost if not available in Ireland?

As the heading suggests I may need a very specific neurological surgery which is not done routinely in Ireland. There are specialist surgeons in the UK who operate privately. I have Irish health insurance and in the policy there is a section stating that pre approved treatments may be covered in the UK.

Has anyone ever gone through anything like this or offer any information.

    Thanks

I have no personal experience of it but am on a forum where it has been discussed and used. It is the
Cross Border Directive and Treatment Abroad Scheme. You need to
    1. Decide on a surgeon
    2. Get GP or your consultant to refer you to desired surgeon.
    3. Download form from HSE website.
Health insurance may cover some costs depending on package you have. Read your policy and you may need to inform them in advance. It may cover scans or part of consultation etc. Hope that helps.

Thanks for replying. I have exhausted options in Ireland and have attended a clinic in London who have given a diagnosis which wasn't discovered in Ireland. There are only a few high volume surgeons in the UK available with none in Ireland.

Well then there shouldn't be any issue regarding the scheme. It will just come down to what your plan covers. Hopefully it will be an option for you.
