Channel 27 has appeared unhidden on Mux2 tonight, showing a 2rn test pattern with tone and entitled 'Saorview Information'.

Just spotted it too wonder if a launch is imminent or if it's accidental .. seems intentional to me.

Something to do with Saorview connect perhaps? We surely would have heard if they were planning another station before now.

They set up a TV channel to try and shift them!

Thats all it is. An info channel for the Saorview Connect Box.

But that's all they have currently on the Saorview Information Channel, why would they need a second channel. Seems nuts if they did that, but in the absence of any information it's as good a suggestion as any :)

Something different to waste the spare bandwidth on?

It seems a strange time of year to be launching anything new without a massive fanfare, especially considering how long they had been promising Connect was coming.

Ah I see there is another 2 test channels, one of which is also called Saorview Information as well. Except they have the card and 1kHz tone.

@ Gerry. The spare bandwidth argument is a misnomer. Tariffs are based on average bitrate consumption.

Seems to be Saorview Info on each mux? ...... or maybe I have not seen the 'new' transmissions yet?

If there was a new channel to be launched at that location, it would have to be of the news/information genre, as 21-30 are set aside for those types of channels.

I'd have thought if there was a new channel added, it would appear on 23, replacing Saorview Information, which would then appear somewhere else on a new number.

I wonder if Saorview have been spooked by the rumour of RTE News Now closing as a linear channel and have been actively seeking out other services to replace it. Euronews maybe?

Either this is a technical error as the number 27 is just too stupidly random, or maybe a bug has been identified in the new Saorview Connect receiver, so this is for a 2rn engineer to monitor over the Christmas period.

Yes I understand the pricing structure but at the end of the day we are still paying the electric bill just to run these test cards.

No, there is no extra electricity used, as the mux uses the same electricity whether they fill the bandwidth with useful stuff or just zeros.

Channel 27 was showing the 2rn test pattern with tone, now it's a duplicate of Channel 23

That's interesting. I wonder are there now firm plans to fill Channels 23 to 26 (and 21 if RTE NN closes).

The 20s channels are for news type programmes so I think it unlikely the NN will close. It might become a real News channel for RTE if they are given advertising on it. Euronews is another possibility if they do not have to pay transmission charges, as could France24, and possibly BBC News International, but they carry advertising and would then be required ( I imagine) to pay their way.

We wait in anticipation ( and expect the usual disappointment).

I recall a poster on here stating that BBC World News is free to carry with permission. But someone else would have to fund the transmission costs surely.

I think that might be possible if the current payments were kept as is, and the various news channels were added as ballast (that is just using spare capacity). They would be SD so will not take up much bandwidth. Still room for TG4 and TV3 to go HD if they felt the need and were prepared to pay for it.

Saorview Information on Channel 23 has been removed from the EPG and is now accessible only as a hidden service.
Channel 27 is the new number for Saorview Information.
