have a 3 day old calf that seems to have runny dark rusty poo this evening, its bloody , could he possibly have coccidiosis already? I gave him bovicox anyway and some fluids, he was fine yesterday evening but his rear end is sopping this evening, he was a big lazy lad and even though i got him sucking after he arrived he didnt drink much

Wouldn't be coccidios this early. Could just be things getting back to normal after being born. Take his temperature to make sure he's ok

Not coccidiosis but I would suggest you ring your vet in case he might need antibiotics.

More than likely e coli, your vet can run a sample to be sure. Definitely not coccidiosis can't be clinical before 3 weeks.

No Bovivac S until early January and that first shipment could be already spoken for so it may be a case of waiting until mid to late January for the second shipment.

    so just to update
calf in good form this morn, I had kept cow away last night and he was very hungry and lively, his rear is totally dry today whatever way it will be this evening, vet reckoned blood was so fresh it could have come thru cows milk to calf and caused infection maybe..who knows, hopefully he stays going now

Nice to hear good news your calf doing well .
Here we have two cases of timber tongue ( never had before ) Signs were frothing mouth when chewing.Antibiotics put in before they get worse & stop eating .
Might be worth noting for someone else.

Had a 9 day old calf pass almost pure blood this morning. Shocked when I saw it. Seperated calf from cow and let in again this evening. He passed some dung which had soem blood but not as bad as this morining. Calf is fine though. Full of life and drinking away fine. I did him with vecoxan anyway just in case, even though it's early for Coccidiosis.

Hadn't one case of scour last year and now already started this year.

thats very similar to my chap yesterday evening, my one had temp over 40 though so serious enough, seems ok again this evening, with this bloody weather the sheds are all so damp isnt helping with new calves i feel

Exactly, the bloody weather. Everything in the yard this morning under 2 years old had snotty noses. Even outside it feels really clammy and unhealthy. Nothing like cold frosty weather to kill these nasty bugs.

According to our Vet most livestock farmers don't possess a thermometer and can't tell the temp of a sick animal

Just to update on this - calf is perfect now. Dung has no blood now whatsoever. Same last night. Explain that. Got no other treatment only vecoxan. If it's not coccidiosis, then what is it? Could it be an internal cut from a bit of Straw?
