Golf Mk7 or Leon Mk3 Petrol

I posted a while back about getting a new car, I still haven’t bit the bullet on a new one mainly because the one I am driving still works fine is taxed and NCT till mid next year and there was a shortage of decent models around within budget,

I was looking at a 1.4tsi Golf manual initially, I was aiming for a MK6 however recently my budget has increased from around 8k to 14k,

I am redundant to the fact that I will probably have to import from the UK as Ireland was somewhat a petrol hating nation in the last 6 years and the used car market is a reflection of this. I would much rather buy from Ireland and avoid the hassle but there is just so little choice

I only do about 8k miles yearly while mostly motorway driving late in the evening when the road are quiet, which means I would probably get away with a diesel but I think a petrol car would be better suited to my needs and wouldn’t have to worry about DPFs ect.

With the budget increase I am now thinking I could go for a 1.4tsi MK7 Golf, it looks as though there is some improvement from the MK6. I was also looking at a Mk3 Seat Leon FR 1.4tsi or even the 1.8tsi models.

I am just looking for any reasons why you would choose one over the other bearing in mind I would be going for a high spec model so FR technology or highline (SE or GT) if I went for the golf. Also if the Leon, there doesn’t seem to be much in the difference between the 1.4tsi and the 1.8tsi, would it be worth stretching for the 1.8?

I really like the Leon, I had one for a year and covered a lot of miles in it. It was a hard car to fault. If you can get a 1.8 FR go for it. FR technology is the one to go for but resale will be a lot lower than a Golf. I’ve only driven the 1.8 in the Ibiza Cupra but it’s a great engine.

The one area where it falls down against the golf is interior quality. It’s not bad by any means but it’s just a tier or two down in certain areas. Compare it to a Focus or a Megane and the like it’s food but the Golf has probably the nicest cabin in that class.
