New laptop

In the market for a new all round laptop, looking to spend up to 1200 on it but at the price would like one that will last quite some time. It's going to be used for basis day to day stuff but also some photo editing and maybe some gaming. As it's not for me would be open to a Mac.

Have a couple in mind but thought that others may have seen something interesting and at a good price so recommend away. Want to have it for Christmas morning too.

you'd have to use courier/express for online at this stage.

you didn't really specify whether the preference is for a portable laptop (like dell xps 13 for example) or a gaming laptop with a graphics card(e.g. going to be heavier and not as portable)?

they are pretty much mutually exclusive features (except at the 2500 euro + level).

It's more an all-rounder, something light enough it can be used on the go but powerful enough that it's not going to stumble when tasked for the first time. Been looking at a few but not settled on one, just looking for recommendations.

then that rules out dedicated gaming laptops I would say.

you could look at something with the new i5 8250u quad-core chip (older ones like i5 7200u are only 2 core) with nvidia mx150 (new chip not card-based graphics). That would be powerful enough to run high-end games at lower settings and handle video editing.

something like the acer swift 3 SF315

Just so you know. I had something like this from ASUS, they're extremely big at that size and very plasticky. Didn't feel that sturdy. If you do go this way, get the glossy screen finish also as the matte was very poor

Was looking on that and only saw it on Littlewoods

I bought an Acer aspire 5, 256gb NVME SSD, i5-8250u, mx150 graphics card, and 8gbddr4 ram for 750 delivered from Germany, was a steal. Only problem is the German keyboard, bit I never look at it anyways. Computeruniverse I think was the site

Actually, have that bookmarked and was considering ordering it earlier this morning.

there's not a lot of laptops with those specs around at the moment (i5 8250u and mx150) but they are definitely what to go for in terms of specs. along with a full hd screen (1080p) and maybe ssd also if in budget.

you'll probably see those specs in lighter 1.5kg laptops over the next few months but not right now (over in the US yes).

that one does not have the nvidia mx150 but it is nice and light. I personally like the 13.3 to 14 inch laptops but gaming is probably better on a bigger screen.

For gaming the screen doesn't matter as it would be connected to a monitor or TV. Ideally I'd like something that I can have in my hands by Saturday that is easy to get around and does the job. The main use will be basic day to day stuff but with a little photoshop. The gaming is more of in an ideal world thing. I just want something that is responsive, fast, won't struggle when tasked with more than two things and be reliable.

I'd go for the Asus vivobook as it has
    8250u cpu
    mx 150 4gb (better than 2gb)
ssd for windows to load up quickly
    hd 1tb for other stuff
    full hd screen
    it's 800 euro

Asus is a good brand and in my experience last the course.

other poster said that he had one (may not have been same model) and it wasn't the most beautiful but check the web for pictures of the actual model

it's not super light at just over 2kg but still fine for carrying around in a backback sometimes (not like everyday).

try to get through to Komplett to see that they could get it to you on time.

Messaged them earlier today to ask could they get delivery before Christmas and to confirm what Nvidia is in it says NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics in the information. Just wanted them to confirm it is the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 - 4 GB

I think that they ship from the Netherlands 3 to 4 days so could be tight.
Would want to go out tomorrow morning.

you could get their phone number from the site and ring in the morning.

other option is the argos acer which you could go and pick up straight away which is lighter and has metal lid and keyboard part (plastic on bottom) so would be less prone to things like scratches and look a bit more premium. cpu not as good though but would be ok...

Gaming on it is secondary, it's mainly an all round laptop that can be used easily on a lap or train. Something that won't struggle when used for photo editing and daily tasks. A log of the gaming laptops are too big and unwieldy, my budget is up to €1000 and even over but if there's a great €600 laptop that isn't gaming elite then I'd consider it.

then something like the 1.6kg Acer would be a lot more comfortable to use in a train situation tbh.

had a look for you and it seems to have to be orderable and available for collection from fri 22nd to mon 25th whatever that means.

I'd get them on the phone to see if it's possible to get if you decide on it.

That is the Acer linked in Argos, the site is being weird for me. Constant errors and the link is taking me to unrelated items.

get the product number and ring them up to see if they can get it to you for Sat or Sun latest.

on the site it says that it can be ordered for collection fri 22 to mon 25th.

that's not conclusive so I'd ring them up as you can't find out from the website.

So going for either the Argos one or the amazon gaming one. Can arrive a lil after Xmas so if there's a better deal let me know.

The laptop on komplett does look nice.... Decisions

amazon gaming one is a lot more powerful. certainly can do a lot more (if there would ever be the possibility of running AAA games down the line at high detail - that one will even do Virtual Reality with the headset as an additional purchase obv which could be a cool option to have down the line, as it has the nvidia 1060 card which meets VR spec requirements). it's as powerful as any console currently and pc games are a lot cheaper generally than console games.

downside is that it's not as portable compared to the Argos one.

the Komplett one is a good bit cheaper 800 vs 1150 for the amazon gaming one.
if only mild gaming is required this is a good value option.

always have to weigh things up!

as far as I know there are not a lot of sales for laptops in Jan - the best deals are around Black Friday in Nov. Although at £1000 for the amazon gaming one that's a decent price for the specs.

Ordered the one with the 1060 from amazon. One hell of a machine for the price and be a nice start on PC VR for myself.
