    Hi,

Hope someone can help. I am looking to paint front door of our new home. Its a new build and the door is I think upvc (solid) and black at the moment. I am looking to paint it dark red..I have never painted before in life so if someone could answer these questions, it will be great help.

do i need to scrap the old paint first?

Do i need to apply some sort of chemical layer before i start painting new color?

What color/brand will be the best for DIY job?

    Regards

I don't think those doors are really meant to be painted.

Not saying it can't be done but I think you'd be mad to paint a brand new upc/composite door, especially since you say you've never painted anything before.

Like any painting job, to get a good finish, you'll need a decent amount of experience and prep.

It might be better to replace the door with one you like the colour of.

uPVC *can* be painted but I wouldn't.

You would want to clean, degrease and key the surface first. Then get a suitable primer, Zinnser should have something. After that use a normal exterior wood paint.

Spray would give a better finish than anything else. as above it should be cleaned entirely and primed (well)

thanks for replies guys. the door is white inside and it is black outside. It seems it is painted with black color. I originally asked builder to send some painter for painting it but his painters are too busy. Will ask him again and see if he can sort it out for me.

Where are you based? Owatrol do an excellent shiny surface primer called ESP. No need for sanding
