I am looking at getting an extension done on my house. Its currently a 2 bed house with an extension already at the back of the house that is a kitchen.
Currently there is a 2 bed rooms upstairs,...but they are quite small. We are looking at extending to 3 bedrooms with a larger bathrooom which will require building on top of the existing kitchen downstairs.anybody any ideas or experience on this.House is based in dublin.so to move out for 3-6 months would cost a good few thousand.

You might find that the 'good few thousand' will end up on the builders tender/cost!

Always a bit of a nightmare for builders trying to work around people still living in a house (like making sure there is heating, hot water and electrics every day) along with it being a bit of an insurance/health and safety headache, so, that can/will be reflected in the builders tender/cost.

My gut feeling will be no.
The ceilings will be exposes, electrics exposed and a nightmare for the contractors H&S.

My sister had it done and lived in the house at the time. Never again she said! Dust everywhere, no kitchen to cook anything for weeks, noise during the day if you're at home, lots of comings and goings, deliveries etc. And did I mention the Dust?!

Just so you know what you're in for!

We did it while our house was being extended .... Nightmare! No matter how well the builder seemed to seal off the working area the dust got everywhere .... everyday! Including into our electronic equipment - TV, DVD player, Desktop etc, all of which had to be replaced within a few months! I definitely wouldn't do it again!

We stayed in our house while our adjoining neighbours built their extension. It was hell for us especially the Oh trying to sleep after night duty.

Yep we stayed in the house during an extension, had no choice in it.
It is doable but if you can afford to move out then do.
Lots and lots of dust, noise, cold , no water at time and power cut a lot...
The biggest issue is not having a kitchen to cook in..

I will be completing an extension soon and was considering trying to stay in the house as much as possible during the build but given what I've read here and heard elsewhere I think I will make plans to be out of the house.

However can anyone advise if this has an effect on insurance or drawing down money for the extension? The bank are part funding our extension and checked on a number of occasions that we still intended to live in the house during the works to which I responded Yes. However I now don't think we will stay during the works. Anyone know why this is important to the bank?
