Overfilled car with oil

I know this has been posted before because I searched but my question is a bit different.
I put to much oil in my car and I got the "check engine" message on the dash. It appeared on my way home from work on Friday so I dropped it in to the garage on Saturday. They said they are not sure how serious the damage is and will get back to me on Monday evening. It is a 2011 Toyota Terra and they said that the overfilling of oil is not something you get away with in Toyota's as easily as other cars.
However I don't trust them as they have overcharged me before for a job. Can anyone tell me what is the potential damage in monetary value for this? Just so I know before Monday so if they say "Oh that will cost x euros to fix, because blah, blah.." then I will know they are trying to pull a fast one.
    Thanks for any replies.

How much extra oil did you put in it? How many miles/kilometres did you cover in the car since you overfilled it?

When they looked at it Saturday they said it wasn't overfilled by a lot but I overfilled it a few weeks ago (I don't know exactly when) so the level would have gone down since then. I can't remember how much I put in over the limit. I drive about 50 miles a weekday and sometimes double that on a Friday. I don't drive at all on weekends.

How much oil did you put in to it? A litre, more than a litre? Was the oil warning light on, what level was the oil on the dipstick before you put the oil in?

Was the car using a lot of oil previous to this?

No. I didn't have to fill it up regularly. I just did it by mistake.

No sure how they can assess any damage, if any.

There has been damage because the car was sluggish going uphill since it happened, it wan't just because of the warning on the dash I took it in.

My own hope would be to return it to the correct level and leave any excess that was going up the pistons, work out of the system. You possibly had a bit of black smoke from the exhaust. Spark plugs being wet would be the main issue. If necessary have the four of them replaced, small job.

Why bring it to a garage you say overcharged you previously.

What was the reason for adding oil?

Can you not remember if it were a litre bottle or the bigger 5 litre ones.

I did this on my auris, the dpf couldn't regenerate as a result of too much oil and was like a slug going uphill. Get garage to check dpf

AND HOW WAS THE DIPSTICK READING BEFORE YOU TOPPED UP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭Mech1

Sorry for the capitals, but they are the questions that need answering before anything can be decided.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,157 ✭✭✭lukin

I don't know exactly how much I put in but it wouldn't have been more than a litre. I'd say the dipstick was reading just below the full mark.

Phone them @ 9.00 am tomorrow, tell them to do no more than remove excess oil and read / record and clear any fault codes.

Tell them you will then collect car and see how it goes.

Why did you top it up?

I totally agree, but if they are talking about it could be big trouble without doing anything yet, im wary.

It was a stupid thing to do, I didn't think it would do much harm to overfill it. I could be in big trouble now.

I don't get it, you randomly decided to put a litre or so of oil in for no reason?

    Is this a wind up??

About 3 months ago I got a call from a mate, he was in Halfords in Carrickmines and says his gf told him to put oil in the car and now it won't drive and was smoking as he tried to get out of the car park.

Turns out he put 5 litres of oil too much in the car. I drained the oil in the carp park and filled with the correct amount, we brought it to where nobody else was and it took half an hour for the smoke to go, I can't describe it you couldn't even see the car there was so much haha. He got away with it because he didn't drive any distance

My neighbour over filled our old Yaris with milking machine oil before, that he had in his shed. It went into limp mode, after driving 30 miles.. but it was grand after it was drained slightly..

    This.
Both you and them know nothing about damage etc until that step is taken.
Especially if you don't trust them. "You can't get away with it on Toyotas" sounds like nonsense

    I’ve seen a C4 overfilled with oil.
Engine went into overrun/runaway and burned out the injectors. Was a costly mistake.
