Restricting clamp access

    Hello

I have had this thought for the past while to do with car clamping and actually restricting the space they have to put the clamp on to the wheel.

Is there some way you could make a guard that you put under your wheel base that restricts them from being able to wrap the chain around the wishbone or whatever else they wrap it around?

Either out of some sort of sheet metal or stainless steel or even wood and just keep them in your boot and fix them on every time you park up or could you make them re-movable so you wouldn't have any problems with the NCT.

If this was possible how could you affix them to your car without damaging it?

Has anyone else thought of this or is it completely not possible?

Great minds think alike! i've often wondered the same thing. Some of the older Citroens sank down when the engine was off, and the rear wheels were only half visible.

I think the best way would be to have some sort of brackets around the wheel arches, and to lock a plate over the arches when you leave the car. The plates need to almost touch the ground so they have great difficulty in trying to tow the car too.;):D

So you get towed instead of being clamped (if on street), great?

A parking ticket normally makes the car immune.

I'm surprised if it is possible that no one has done this, just a thought of course maybe someone out there will come up with some sort of contraption :p:D

You could just put your own clamp on it?

Yeah I suppose you could, but wouldn't they just clamp a different wheel? or try put a clamp over your clamp? Hahaha I'm not sure!

If you could clone their clamp, you'd stand a chsnce of faking it. I'm not sure how many vehicles operate in each city and how much data they share but actively checking for cloned clamps might not be part of the programme

My mate had one years ago. Painted it to look like the Dublin council one. Used it around the city for a couple of months, no hassle. One day he came back to the car and it had 3 other council clamps on it

That's gas. I supppose if you're doing it every day you'll get noticed

You would have to clone the actual notices they stick on to your car as well, but that would be handy enough!

Yeah he used to park near a block of flats in Dublin 8. Got away with it for a good while. It was permit parking in the area.
He only had to pay one fine, but played dumb about his own clamp.
He gave to another guy who owned a trailer, to stop the trailer being robbed. I think he still has it.

For the amount of time you spend putting the hardware on and off to avoid being clamped you could easily find a legal parking space.

The only sure way to avoid someone else clamping you is to fit 4 of your own. But don't be surprised if another lock is on when you get back or if they want to be spiteful your locks are glued.

Wasn't it very difficult to put clamps on a Citroen XM if the suspension was down?

I'm sure some clever maker type person could come up with some cheap contraption that would be able to be removed and fixed on again easy enough.

What if you got nice paper wheel covers shaped to fit the entire arch. Get them printed up with some anti vandal text stating wheel and tyre protectors - Do not touch.
Of course clamper will rip them off. You then get to play silly beggars with them claiming they damaged your property and send them bill for replacing your wheel protector including your fee for your time etc in rectifying the 'damage' ... just as a piss take.

You could always carry 4 bricks in the boot and take your wheels off eveytime you need to park in town.

Yes, I read here years ago that someone saw an illegally parked XM with its suspension dropped being lifted off the ground by air bags and then hoisted onto a truck.

Much easier to clone the key. ;) To do this you only need access to one of their locks. I'd say there are any amount of cut off locks around. :D

Can you clone a key just from a lock?

    Yup!

    How?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Locksmiths can do it anyway.

There are a couple of ways. Google is your friend. Easiest by far is to grind the lock open and make a key by sight. You just need to make the shape the lock wants.
