Opinions sought on rust on 2013 Kia Cee'd

Hi Folks,

Hoping to buy a 2013, 1.4 Kia Cee'd. It's a UK import to Ireland.

It's in immaculate condition inside and on the body except there's some some rust on the centre of the wheel hubs. More concerning there's also some underneath. Take a look at these photos - I'd like some opinions from users here who know what they're talking about.






I'm buying from a well known, generally well thought of, local garage that has a used car sales yard and they've told me they will address the rust issues but they think it's pretty insignificant - obviously they want to sell the vehicle. I don't think it's insignificant though so I'd like to get it checked out.

Can any of you give me some of the part names that are affected as well please? Opinions welcome especially from pros. Can this be sorted relatively easy or will I be looking at replacing significant costly parts in a year or two? I doubt it would be covered under the Kia warranty because a dealer could fob it off as wear and tear.

Both of those are just surface rust.

The wheel rim is of zero concern. That'll never be a structural concern. You could blast a can of matte black spray paint over it if you didn't like how it looks.

The rust on the rear beam is probably a bit more than you would find on a similar age Irish car but it is also surface/ cosmetic and would take many many years before it becomes an issue, in so far as I wouldn't let it bother me. That said, if you were feeling proactive, rubbing it down and giving it a coat of Schultz would be nice.

I have a 14 year old merc and I would say it has less rust than that.

While I agree it’s relatively surface, I don’t like the look of it. I’d lacy on it anyway and chemically treat it and paint it as advised.

Wouldn’t like to see it get worse

That's normal on uk cars of that age and not a concern. It's only surface rust and nithing to worry abouton those components. It would be a different story if it was on the chassis.

As said above the surface rust wouldn't be a problem for a long but it's fairly handy to rub it down and put protection on it
