Best Tax band/credit allocation for married couple

    Hi,

Would anyone be able to help with this. A friend is looking for advice on the following.

They are a married couple with taxable earnings of €18,000 Person A and €37,500 person B for this year. At present they are not jointly assessed. I have advised that they get this sorted and hopefully get their refund for the overpayment in 2017.

I know that they can shift some of the 20% tax band from person A to person B but is it worth moving any tax credits? If so what is the best structure?

    Many Thanks

    Joe

Person A seems to be (just about) using their full tax credit so there's no benefit in moving the credits. They should definitely look at moving some of the standard rate allowance as it will save Person B a few thousand in tax. In my experience the revenue are very helpful on matters like this - just ring them up, give them your PPS numbers and ask them to adjust the band in the most favourable way and they'll arrange it for you.
