Jim Carrey is re-teaming with Oscar-winning director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) for a new Showtime half-hour comedy series titled Kidding.

Here’s the pitch: “Carrey plays Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television, a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – who also anchors a multimillion dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister, and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.”

Catherine Keener will star opposite Jim Carrey

Judy Greer will play Jill, the estranged and rebellious wife of Jeff (played by Jim Carrey), a children’s television icon whose family life begins to crumble

When Carrey gets the right role he is top class and I think this could the right role.

What a cast joining him Catherine Keener, Frank Langella & Judy Greer

I'm finding it way too depressing to be honest, probably a bit cathartic for Carrey given his troubles in his life.I cant see them making multiple seasons with these characters

I have to say I really enjoyed the series as a whole.

I would have been happy if it was a one and done series.

I will watch season two when it starts next year and see how it goes.

I'm just two episodes in, as it only reached Sky Atlantic last week - I really like it so far. I'm surprised at the lack of publicity for a show with such a huge name. Maybe a limited marketing budget.

Anyway, Jim Carrey plays the clown in pain and it suits him perfectly - nothing new there, but the writing is great, and Frank Langella and Catherine Keener are awesome.

Carrey's character Jeff Piccirillo has been playing children's entertainer Mr. Pickles for 30 years and he has become Mr. Pickles - all innocence and goodytwoshoes-ness and schmaltz. Of course kids love him, and not only kids but adults who grew up with him/whose children love him, do too. Said parents think it's a nudge-nudge wink-wink act... but it's not. And family members and colleagues think it's unhealthy, that he's burying his true feelings, using the Mr. P persona as a coping mechanism and as a defence mechanism, and who the heck knows what way his true emotions could eventually come forth. And he is dealing with really awful tragic stuff in his personal life. He reminds me greatly of Ned Flanders and Ned's ultimate meltdown - and, not even joking, they are pretty similar men. Not that Jeff has had a meltdown - and we don't know if he will, but the signs point to it. Has the makings of a top notch character study.

It's sad, dark and hilarious - with some nice twists in episode one alone. I'm greatly looking forward to episodes three and four tomorrow night.
