    Hello
I was thinking of getting a house in galway.
I am on disability benefit and am hoping to get rent allowance.

was wondering who do i contact to ask about rent allowance.
How long before rent allowance pays the first rent bill.
does it take a long time to start up.

I know go to galway wednesday and go to galway advertister office.
And ask the landloard in the paper will he take rent allowance.

After i get the flat i hope to look for work.

    Any help is appricated.

Hey, I wouldn't be particularly familiar with your situation I'm afraid, but maybe if you PM Victor the mod of Accommadation/Property or I can copy your post there also?

As far as I'm aware your best bet would be to contact the department of social and family affairs

    www.socialwelfare.gov.ie

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

    Hope you get on ok!

You have to be renting for six months before they pay anything (courtesy of last year's cuts). Just so you know and all that. That doesn't mean you have to wait six months before getting any allowance, just that you won't get it unless you've been paying rent to someone for six months (in other words, if you're already renting for six months or more you'll get the first payment pretty soon after applying (and it'll be backdated to the date of application)).

The cuts relating to rent allowance might be changed today ala the budget.

Also if you need to rent somewhere due to your disability or disability related issues at home or where you are living you can get dispensation from the rules. Think you should also call into the Citizens Information Centre in Galway for advice before you go applying anywhere.
