Jvc tv after lightning

Howdy. A question for you guys if anyone can help. I bought a jvc tv from Currys in Galway in September and having had it a week it died from a lightning strike (I assume). No problem they exchanged it straight away. However yesterday we had another lightning strike and even though I had the tv on a surge protected power source it died. I got this tv on the 23rd of September. My question, should they exchange this one as well or is it out of warranty. Thanks

Lightning strikes wouldn't be under warranty or consumer rights in the first place. However, it sounds as if the TV design is a bit crap to begin with regardless if nothing else in the house is blowing. Currys customer service is vastly improved on the old days also so I'd bring it back again

Warranty covers material or manufacturing defect.
Was the TV sold as being "lightning" proof? If it was then Currys should exchange it, if not then TBH there is no inherent fault with the TV.
The fault is due to an external factor outside the scope of any materials/manufacturing warranty and as such you are likely out of luck with hoping for a warranty replacement and are relying on goodwill.
I am surprised that the TV was ever exchanged for lightning strike damage in the 1st instance.

I note you mention that your TV was on a surge protector the 2nd time, I know that some surge protector manufacturers offer a warranty that covers connected devices (Belkin and a few others spring to mind) so if your surge protector has a protected devices guarantee that may offer some protection for you.

I would think however that given 2 TV's have gone this way for you, that the surge was likely received via the aerial rather than via the electricity supply at least in the second instance.
Does your surge protector have aerial protection?

I thought lightning never strikes twice ?

Thanks for the replys, the surge protecter was an extension lead with 4 sockets which was just for power. There were 3 items on the socket, the tv, a sky box and a dvd player. The only thing affected was the tv.

Also, the lightning strike did not strike the house or anywhere near it, but it did cause a power outage in the area for a few hours.

Was the TV connected to an aerial? If it was and the aerial wasn't run through a surge protector, there was no surge protection for that portion of any "circuit" that would also explain why the TV was damaged and nothing else.

Tne tv was not connected to an aerial, only the sky box and dvd player.

With respect, why are you telling us that a lightning strike damaged the tv, so?

Have you considered that the tv is/was faulty?

Did your surge protector come with a warranty? I think most do.

My apologies the lightning caused the power cut and thus caused the death of the tv indirectly. After the first one in September I made sure to put it on a surge protected power source. I have been on to Curry's help line and they advised me to bring it in to the shop for repair.
    Thanks for your help.

I can understand how a sudden stoppage of power could damage a hard drive in a computer. However, I haven't come across (even a smart tv) a tv with a hard drive yet and I wonder how a power cut could damage the tv.

If a power cut was enough to damage the tv (and its replacement?), have you considered that it may be a faulty design and that the goods may not be of merchantable quality or fit for normal use?

Howdy Pat, I have indeed considered that it could be a fault with this particular model of tv and I brought this up with the guy on the helpline. He agreed that it sounded odd as none of the other items on the surge protected socket were affected, and that there was no aerial connected to the tv. They are going to look into it when I bring it back to the shop this evening. Thanks again for your input.

Quick update. Currys informed me when I brought in the tv that it would take three weeks or thereabout to get it seen to. In the mean time no replacement so I had to fork out for a smaller set in order to have it for Xmass. !!
